13:25 Matrix: The future of communication is decentralised, secure and interoperable
Matthew Hodgson, Technical Co-founder, Matrix.org
Over the last few years many messaging platforms have gained popularity. They offer the same basic
functionality, and differentiate with better UIs/ UX and the types and number of integrations and bots. However,
they all have one thing in c ommon: they don't talk to eac h other. In the c urrent situation, the biggest loser is the
user. It means we have to create numerous accounts across all these silos so we c an keep in touc h with all our
c ontac ts and not miss out on their soc ial interac tion. And in doing so we give away our data to various c entralised
silos, c ompletely losing c ontrol over it. But users are also the most important thing for apps - c an we make use
of this power and demand a future where apps can interoperate? Instead of joining the app that's currently
where all your c ontac ts hang out, you c ould instead c hoose the app that has the most integrations and thus be
able to talk to everyone.
This is the problem the Matrix team is trying to solve: Matrix (matrix.org) is an open standard for dec entralised
c ommunic ation. Matrix c an be used for dec entralised group c hat (with optional end-to-end enc ryption), WebRTC
signaling, Internet of Things data transfer, and anywhere you need a c ommon data fabric to link together
fra gmented silos of c ommunication.

The rapid growth in data c ombined with slower growth in servic e revenues is straining the inc umbent Telec om
industry. The key c hallenge fac ing mobile servic e providers is the ability to rec over network investments fast
enough to redeploy them for c apac ity upgrades. Also known as the Red Queen Rac e, the need to run to stay in
the same (financ ial) position. Digital Transformation, though sounding nic e, is not delivering the results; like every
‘boil the oc ean’ projec t of the past. NFV/ SDN is similarly failing bec ause the operational model is not changing, its
simply virtualizing the box and wires thinking of the past. Change the business model is the only proven option:
