1. QUESTION 1: IN WHAT WAYS
DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT
USE, DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE
FORMS AND CONVENTIONS
OF REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS?
2. EDITING
Our trailer follows the common conventions of a horror trailer as
shown using sound and effects when editing the trailer.
The trailer that we made included lots of sound to help build tension
during certain parts of the trailer and to give the trailer a sense of
realism.
We added multiple effects to the trailer such as a video camcorder
so that the audience feel as if they are watching the actual
recording not just a film.
The overall film is quite dark which is a typical horror convention.
We looked at multiple horror films such as Friday 13th and The
Woman In Black to help give us ideas when editing our horror trailer.
3. PHOTOSHOP
When making our horror poster and magazine, we looked at
various existing horror film posters and magazines to help give us
ideas.
Our horror poster was inspired by the horror poster, 'The Woman
In Black’.
We added various effects to the horror poster to add more
realism to the poster and to make it feel more dull, similar to The
Woman In Black.
4. FOOTAGE
Our horror trailer challenges the common conventions of a horror
trailer as it is not very fast paced.
Also there is not a lot of iconography, whereas in a typical horror
trailer there is a lot.
There is no communication between characters in our horror
trailer which challenges the common conventions of a horror
trailer by making it hard to establish antagonists from
protagonists.
5. COSTUME/PROP
The characters in our horror trailer had casual clothes on which
were clean which goes against horror trailers as most horror
trailers have dirty and torn clothes.
Our antagonist had a knife which represented the fact that she is
evil and possessed.
The antagonist in our horror trailer had multiple marks on her skin
to represent that she is evil and to help the audience understand
that she is the antagonist.
6. YOUTUBE
We used the video sharing website ‘YouTube’ to upload our
finished horror trailer as it is very simple to use and it is free.
Most horror film trailers are uploaded onto YouTube as many
viewers can be attracted due to the high amount of people who
use this website.
By uploading our horror trailer to YouTube, we are attracting as
many people as possible to watch our film.
We followed the conventions of professional film companies,
whether they were major studios or independent, as we have
uploaded our trailer onto this website.
7. POSTER
Our poster followed many conventions of horror posters.
The horror poster which we created was very dull and made the
viewer want to see the trailer.
At the top of the poster, we included reviews which are common
conventions of a poster.
We also included the main star’s name at the top of the poster as
this can attract more viewers. This is another common convention of
horror posters.
The poster which we created has the film rating at the bottom right
so that viewers know the minimum age they must be to watch this
film.
8. SETTING
Whilst making our trailer, we took some inspiration from the film
‘Friday the 13th’.
Due to this, and the audience feedback we had received, we
decided to base our horror trailer in the woods.
The woods are common places for horror trailers to be set.
Therefore we have followed the conventions of a horror trailer.
9. NAME OF FILM
The name of our film was shown at the end of our trailer after the
viewers had watched it, therefore they are more likely to
remember the name of the film once they have watched the
trailer. This is a typical horror trailer convention.
We also played music to build up tension when the name was
being shown which is also a common convention.
In our poster, the film name is at the bottom of the page which is
a common convention of horror posters.
10. PRODUCTION COMPANY NAME
Our production company name was put at the beginning of our
trailer, which is a typical convention of film trailers.
We ensured that the length of the production company name
being shown was not long as this was a common convention of a
horror trailer.
We also gave the production company name an effect to make
it look more frightening when viewers saw it.
