The History of Ska By: Joel Kirst
Background Ska has it’s roots in Jamaica in the early 1960s Fuses calypso music with American Jazz and R&B Made for dancing
Sound of Ska Traditional ska band consists of: Guitars Bass Guitars Drums Keyboards Horns (saxophones, trumpets and trombones)
Sound of Ska Drumbeats are on the 2nd and 4th beats Guitar hits the 2nd, 3rd and 4th beats Upbeat, quick tempo for dancing
Important Terms Rude Boys Impoverished Jamaican teens hired by DJs to crash street dances Gangs were formed from these groups Skanking Dance style to go with Ska music Do the running man, arms bent at elbows with fists punching outward http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PY4QAK_a0QY
Coxsone Dodd Founded Studio One in order to provide Jamaica with the ska sound unique to their culture during their freedom from Great Britain
Evolution of Ska Ska came in three “waves” First wave came about in Jamaica in the 1960s Second wave created in England in the 1970s Third wave created in America and is the most known form of Ska today

Skinheads Found in the two tone ska scene in England Refers to their shaved heads Usually wore Jeans rolled up so people could see their combat boots Wore suspenders and T-Shirts with a Jean jacket or suit coat

So…How Does It Relate? Ska drew influences from different genres: Jazz R&B Punk Just as Rock and Roll did  Created a new subculture Subculture took roots in the Punk movement
