Target Audience and Attracting Audience
Using the Storyline The era Film Noir is based around is the 40’s up to the early 60’s. Using President John F Kennedy and his involvement with Marilyn Monroe is a perfect basis for our film as he was in power from 1961 till 1963. His womanizer ways and links with Marilyn Monroe were a big part of the early 60’s with many gossip magazines and newspapers documenting their extra marital relationship. The audience that would recognize the story and speculation around the events. Also using Marilyn Monroe a widely adored and icon of the 20th century for many people throughout her life and many years after her demise. This will bring the attraction to younger audiences as it’s difficult to find anyone who doesn’t know who Marilyn Monroe is even if they have no idea about her career.
Using the Characters It can be argued that although he reign of power was short JFK is the most documented American President ever, he was featured in mainstream news as well as any political coverage. As with Marilyn Monroe, using a widely adored and icon of the 20th century for many people throughout her life and many years after her demise. This will bring the attraction to younger audiences as it’s difficult to find anyone who doesn’t know who Marilyn Monroe is even if they have no idea about her career. We made sure although Miss Monroe is copied or shown in the title sequence JFK’s womanizer ways are emphasized with his relations with two other women gives the audience a personal feel seeing into this mans life and his romantic ties with many women. The camera shots we used make the audience feel involved. The first part of the sequence makes the audience feels that they are following JFK and his everyday life and in the second part of the filming sequence the audience are over powering JFK they are watching him squirm as he’s being interrogated the complete opposite to the earlier arrogant JFK they see in the beginning of the sequence.
Comparison An existing film noir we watched is LA Confidential although they haven’t used any celebritiesthey have still managed to get a glamorous style to the film. They achieved this by the props and settings that were used. For example they had nicely cut suits and fur coats and the settings looked expensive. In the same way, all of our actors and actresses were as important as each other and they were able to create the glamorous effect in the same way.
The Target Audience The target audience for this type of film could be a number of people: People who were interested in Marilyn Monroe and JFK Older people Fans of Film Noir
People interested in JFK and Marilyn Monroe The relationship between these two people was considered one of the most controversial in history, so a lot of people would be interested in this part of history and because it is an integral part of the film it should be popular.
Older People The sort of people that this film could also appeal to an older audience who would remember the characters that we have included in the film. For example the femme fatales, the dominant males etc. This would appeal to people who were in their 50s – 70s as they would feel involved and important.
Film Noir Fans People who enjoy film noirs may enjoy films like this because recently there haven’t been many films that were completely film noir, so this could be seen as a welcome change. There have been several hybrids but this would be a rarity and would therefore be popular among the audiences we’d be aiming at.
