1. Who would be the
audience for your
media product?
As Media Evaluation
2. Key Questions
• What Genre does your film belong to?
• Who is the audience for this genre?
3. Key Questions
• Who’s is my audience?
• Modes of research; Internet, Theatres,
Radio, Printed media.
4. Key Questions
• My film is in the genre of of social realism.
Social realism can be defined as a film the
try’s to display ‘a slice of life’ or ‘life as it
was really lived’. A social realist film often
also has a social intent behind it.
6. Internet
• From my internet research i found i found there is
a clear social type that are fans of social realism
• Or there is a clear group who aren’t interested in
social realism
7. Internet
• My research of these websites made me develop
some common characteristics for those who
watch social realism.
• I found that the common viewer and reviewer on
those websites were those who had some kind of
higher education or a media background of some
kind.
8. Internet
• Othercharacteristics of the common
viewers includes;
They are looking for something
Understanding of mentally stimulating
representations
They want something outside the ‘norm’
9. Mubi
Examples of discussion list on MUBI. This is websites show social realism more than
others. And it has a clear emphasis on discussion. If this is a huge shower of social
realism and also has masses of discussion then it is clear that a lot of social realism
viewers like film discussion. This also make the point that social realism viewers are
more intelligent as they can talk about the film.
10. Internet
Mubi- Is more for the social realism viewer as is offers
more of a serious film discussion platform. As we’ve seen
the type of person who watches social realism knows how
to talk about film so this site would be better for them
whereas...
LoveFilm-More for the viewing of mainstream products and
doesn’t have much enfaces on discussion.
11. Internet
• I found this by looking at the common reviewers and how
they wrote
• The majority who didn’t write using media language tended
to not like the film.
12. Internet
• I assessed that quite a lot of the viewers may be
university students because they fit the
characteristics of those common viewers and they
are notorious for wanting something outside the
‘norm’
• When i moved to to look at theatres i found that
the ones showing social realism are often in
university towns/cities
14. Theatres
Are there cinemas specifically for social realism?
Do only independent cinemas show social realism?
Do mainstream cinema chains show social realism?
Are there any chains that show social realism at all?
15. Theatres
• I found two types of cinema that commonly
show social realism
The first is independent
theatres
And the second was chains that show
social realism along with mainstream
productions
16. Theatres
• Independent cinemas that show social
realism productions
Arnolfini Centre Cornerhouse National Film Theatre
17. Theatres
• How do these places represent themselves;
They show themselves to be places for a film experience (not
somewhere you go every week) mostly showing classic, foreign or
realist films
So although there main audience would be users of these types of
film, they also target no users looking for a one off experience.
Going to one is like going to see a show or musical, a
special occasion
18. Theatres
• Chains that show social realism productions
as well as mainstream products
Picturehouse Everyman Cinema’s
19. Theatre
• They have luxurious seating and environment
• They do show mainstream films
Their luxurious environment could be to attract a
more sophisticated audience, the kinds of people who
like social realism.
20. Theatre
• Both these types of cinema have shown
interest in social realism so may be
interested in my film.
• Films like Fish Tank have been shown in
mainstream i cinemas so maybe they may
be interested in my film.
21. Radio
BBC radio 3
BBC radio 4
Has done such things as have a
documentary on the last 50 years of
social realism
Has done such things as interviews with social realism
directors like Andrea Arnold and even supporting
screenings of films. they worked wit the Opencinema
to set up a showing of Ken Loach’s ‘Sweet Sixteen’.
22. Radio
The station is targeting an older audience, there is certainly nothing
that would interest young children and it is unlikely it would be
appealing to most teenagers. The shows broadcasted are based on the
following subjects; art, comedy, discussions, documentaries, drama,
history, money, news, politics, readings, religion and science. I found
an article on The Telegraph’s website, titled ‘Now I know the clock’s
ticking, I’ve started listening to Radio 4.’
It is clear from this that ones listening to this radio station that
shows social realism is one that targets and gets an older
audience.
It appears to be a common conception that Radio 4 is
aimed at older listeners, as the article explores in a
light-hearted fashion the indicators of getting old and
listening to Radio 4 was noted as a key indicator.
Another article I sourced on The Evening Standard’s
website reported on Radio 4’s new tactic to draw in a
younger audience, b y broadcasting their show from
three major universities across the UK. Radio 4 is
clearly aware of their current audience being in the
age bracket of 40 years and over. The links to both Although they are
articles are listed below. trying to reach a young
audience
23. Radio
The content of these two can tell us
something more about the audience. I
normal radio listener listens to radio stations
like ‘Capital’ and ‘BBC Radio 1’. These tend
to stick music, interviews with popular
celebrity’s and call up game shows for
prizes. While radio 3 and radio 4 have
documentary’s comedy shows. On a deeper
level interviews with people like Andrea
Arnold also say something about the
audience as someone who’s not a fan of
social realism wouldn’t know who she is.
from this it is clear that BBC Radio 3 and
BBC Radio 4 have shown that they want an
older more cultured audience. This is
supported by the difference in content from
mainstream stations to these stations that
have social realism content. So more
cultured, older people are more than likely
going to be my audience.
24. Printed Media
The only magazines showing social realism are magazines
exclusively for film.
Magazines such as......
A social realism film
(Fish Tank)
25. Printed Media
• Whereas other film are shown in magazines
with lots of content and no set topic.
From this information it is clear that only those interested in
film enough to buy the film magazine would be my audience,
so film enthusiasts.
It also costs to join so a student probably wouldn’t be able to
afford the subscription, showing an aim at older readers.
27. Film 4 has shown British film since 1982.
When they shut down briefly the BBC said
that it ‘a very sad day’ in the British film
industry. This shows that they are key to the
British film industry if the BBC is saying this.
Nowadays film four tend to show more
mainstream products so probably have a
mainstream audience not a social realism
audience. Although social realism films have
had mainstream success like ‘This is England’
so this channels audience could be my
audience.
28. BBC4 started in 2002 and has to because of it’s license show, 100 hours
h
of new arts and 110 hours of factual programmes each year. These are
usually watched by intelligent older people. I found this by looking at
BBC 4‘s audience demographic online. This says something about the
audience as this channel shows social realism.
This channel also has a film audience because they are licensed to show 20
international films a year. This Channels audience matches mine in many ways so
looking at the there audience in detail is key
29. BBC 4
• The Guardian did an article
As the debate about the future of BBC3 and BBC4 thunders on (axe it!
save it! merge it!) we spend a week looking at the ratings performance of
the two under-fire digital channels. Value for money or time to hit the off
button?
By looking at this we can see that we are looking a
niche market because its clear they have fewer
viewers
30. Television
From Television research i found that my audience may be
smaller than a regular audience. The programming has
shown them to want to see more profound cultured
shows. Making me see them as more intelligent than a
regular audience. If we combine the information shown by
radio they most likely are older. Although Film4 has a
history of showing British films but now has a more of a
mainstream audience so a mainstream audience could be
accessible
31. Target Audience
Research
Screening with Q and A Questionnaire
Research formats
Focus group discussion
32. Target Audience
Research
• Although the main main purpose of these
was to found out a young persons need for
film, i also did them the type of person who
would be a social realism viewer
33. Screening
All those that took part in my
screening enjoyed the filmed i
showed. They6 said they could
relater to real issue like mental
illness and pregnancy. There
interest showed me that todays
young audience could be a social
realism audience.
That being said they had not seen social realism before so
they are not the social realism audience of today.
34. Target Audience
Research
Focus Group
I used media students
They watched the first cut of my
film introduction
35. Focus Group
They gave precise media specific answers.
They had also seen a lot of social
realism. And as media students
we can conclude they had seen a lot of films.
So from this i have concluded that the main young person that
would view my film is a media student.
36. Focus Group
• It could also be said that the main young
audience is a student audience. As we have
found out that the cinemas that show social
realism are in university citys, and that the
ones viewing and are interested in all forms
of media displaying social realism is an
inteligant one, that like to discuss film.
Students fit this discription perfectly.
