Will the banning of
electric cigarettes at
Standard Life create a
precedent for others?
Electric cigarettes have been banned by one
of the biggest companies in Scotland
Standard Life as they apparently breached
their strict anti-smoking rules.
The impact of Standard Life, one of Scotland’s
biggest financial firms, banning electric
cigarettes could potentially be enormous and
perhaps set a precedent. Electric cigarettes are well known as being a healthy substitute for
smoking cigarettes as they do not contain carcinogens; however they're still being banned
by major businesses.
Electric cigarettes contain a liquid called e juice that is vaporised whenever the electronic
cigarette is smoked. Ecigs do not have any tobacco but they do contain nicotine which
includes traces of tobacco, but they do not have any of the harmful carcinogens that tobacco
cigarettes contain. The danger associated with smoking an electric cigarette has been
compared to drinking coffee.
They do not have the carcinogens that cigarettes contain; electronic cigarettes are much
healthier than cigarettes. Electronic cigarettes do on the other hand contain nicotine, the
habit forming drug in cigarettes. Nicotine is a stimulant however making electronic cigarettes
similar to a mug of coffee.
For 20 years, Standard Life has been a non-smoking organisation and they even have an
occupational health department that will help workers stop smoking cigarettes. Standard Life
feels that permitting personnel to smoke electric cigarettes would undermine their strict non-
smoking guidelines and for that reason have prohibited e cigarettes in the workplace.
Electric cigarettes are extremely popular with a lot of A-list celebrities such as Kate Moss
and Britney Spears. E-cigarettes are quickly replacing tobacco with one e cig manufacture
alone boasting over 20,000 sales in Scotland alone. A huge amount of this is caused by the
health benefits however the price is a huge factor with an e-cigarette working out
significantly cheaper.

Electric cigarettes are available online and they're starting to be stocked in chemists and
even supermarkets. As time passes, they'll be readily available just like cigarettes are today.
Many people begin with a disposable e cigarette before getting a standard rechargeable
electric cigarette.
The majority of Britain’s biggest companies
nevertheless permit electric cigarettes in the
office including Scottish Widows, HBOS and
Lloyd's. Even Edinburgh City Council permits staff
to use electric cigarettes at the office.
The government have recently setup a
government body called ‘the nudge unit’ which
encourages individuals to switch from cigarettes
to e cigarettes. The nudge unit realises that quit
or die campaigns aren't effective anymore and e-
cigarettes are healthier than cigarettes. The more
smokers that switch, the less people that will die
from tobacco related diseases.
Potentially e-cigarettes could save millions of lives if tobacco smokers changed. This is the
idea of the ‘nudge unit’ set up by the Conservative party and the banning of electric
cigarettes at Standard Life may potentially harm this because it could set a precedent.
Sadly lots of people do not understand the benefits of electric cigarettes and precisely why
they are a healthier substitute for normal cigarettes and do not emit any dangerous
chemicals.
Switch to electric cigarettes, a far healthier alternative to tobacco cigarettes.
