Mentor-Protégé Session #5: Graduation
Congratulations! Through participation in the GIT Mentor-Protégé Program, you’ve heard the remarkable achievements of women in the STEM community from your mentors, guest speakers, the GIT program committee, and from each other. In our final session, we will consider the strategies you’ve learned and focus on how to channel them into making decisions for your STEM future.
1. SESSION 5: GIT Graduation VA Mentor Protégé Program 3/9/16
2. Welcome Back GIT GIRLS
Make sure to sign in at the front!
Networking Exercise:
Talk to at least 3 protégés and/or mentors
1. Use the 3 PUMP handshake to introduce yourself
2. State your name and where you go to school or work
3. Share which GIT session you liked the best and how you will apply it to
your immediate future
3. GIT Networking
Hi my name is Jenny Oh and my favorite GIT session is Embrace Fear &
Learn to Fail.
I’ve failed many times in my life, and for the longest time I was ashamed I failed
my parents, my friends, my colleagues, my mentors who I look up to, and those
who look up to me.
It’s hard for a perfectionist like me to come to terms with I’m not perfect. But as I
grow older, I realize EVERYONE FAILS, some more miserably than others. The more
important thing is to be able to bounce back, because that’s what makes us even
better!
It’s so important for me to pass that message on to you…because I
failed so many times in my life, and many times I wanted to give up,
but somehow I found the courage to be resilient – I want you all to
be resilient throughout your lives!!!!!

PANELISTS
•Collaboration & Innovation – We have discussed the core GIT beliefs of collaboration meaning, working
with others and leveraging skills to change the world, and innovation meaning, continuously generating
creative solutions to solve the problems of the world. First, how has your professional training prepared
you to work effectively not only as a team member but a team leader for STEM? Second, can you
describe a STEM problem you tackled and how your educational degrees and professional training helped
you to keep up with advances?
•Reflection - If you could go back and talk to your 16 year old self for a few minutes, what advice would
you give her both about STEM, career choices, and this program?
•Empowerment - For those women interested in STEM careers, what qualities do these younger women
need to succeed? What qualities do you look for when finding exceptional talent / innovative teams?
19. Which protégé has inspired you most?
This award will be given to the girl who has shared
her ideas, encourages others to be more active, and is
a role model and inspiration to other protégés
