My joint keynote with Jennifer Pahlka of Code for America at the Accela Engage conference in San Diego on August 5, 2014. We talk about current advances in technology, and how they call for anyone developing services to put their users at the center. In particular, we talk about how these lessons apply to government. Making government work by the people and for the people in a 21st century way is central to restoring faith in government.

This is an April 1916 Havana presentation stressing that Cuba has the technical skills to make major digital advances in the Internet ecosystem, and that the lack of political will to "unleash" Cuban abilities (mainly among its underemployed youth) is a major risk to Cuba's future. It can muster the political will to ride the digital wave, or sit back and be swamped by a tsunami of foreign oligopolies in league with emerging Cuban oligarchs. It is the tragedy of a country with the abilities being shackled by a lack or (or perverse) political will that will betray even the goals of the Cuban Revolution.

Transformed media landscape - and how we can make best use of itcentrumcyfrowe
Presentation on key social trends related to digital technologies, presented at the infoactivism workshop organized by Centrum Cyfrowe Projekt: Polska for the Trust for Civil Society in Central and Eastern Europe.
We now use more information in our day-to-day life than before. The volume of information available through radio, television, internet, books, newspapers, and magazines has enlarged manifold, both in developed and developing countries. Increased flows of information between parties, individuals as well as organizations, have made interactions information-intensive. The unprecedented advances in information and communication technologies (ICT) have transformed societies in both developed and developing countries in ways that were unimaginable not so long ago. The way we conduct our personal lives, the way we build and maintain interpersonal relationships, and the way we engage in production and distribution activities have undergone changes that have long-run implications for the society in general and for the economy in particular.
The school needs, more than ever before, to make it possible to prepare workers with a new education to carry out their activities adjusted to the new times. In order to implement a new education, it is imperative that we begin to identify the human skills necessary for 21st century work and to adjust our obsolete education system to form citizens better equipped for a reality that is different from the industrial age that is coming to an end and still prevails at the moment.
The Fragmentation of Culture, Learning, Teaching and Technology: Implications...eraser Juan José Calderón
The Fragmentation of Culture, Learning, Teaching and Technology: Implications for the Artificial Intelligence in Education Research Agenda in 2010" de Gordon McCalla.
Abstract.
My goal in this paper is to try to characterize Artificial Intelligence in Education (AIEd) research a decade hence. By then, the increasing universality of information technology will have so overloaded people with information that they will find it necessary to drastically constrain their interactions in cyberspace. The result will be a major trend to localization, not globalization. This localization will have two main aspects, both resulting in a fragmented social environment. The first is that people will live in their own personal electronic villages, and will view cyberspace locally from there, accessing only that information and contacting only those other people that are consistent with their own perspectives and goals. The second is that cyberspace will be partitioned into a massive number of virtual communities each with a global geographic reach but a narrow conceptual focus. People in their villages will be members of only a few such communities. Knowledge will flow relatively slowly from community to community, impacting people only when it enters their village through the communities in which they participate. This will, of course, have major impact on the nature of learning and teaching, which, in turn, will affect the AIEd research agenda. The issues the field considers to be important, the kinds of technology that it builds, even the way research is carried out, may all be transformed.
Information Society is a term for a society in which the creation, distribution, and manipulation of information has become the most significant economic and cultural activity.
This article aims to present #Unplugging > Beyond Hyper-Connected Societies Workshop that will be conducted by Dr Calzada & Dr Cobo at the University of Oxford on 20th June by the support of The Oxford Research Centre in the Humanities (TORCH).
An information society is a society where the creation, distribution, use, integration and manipulation of information is a significant economic, political, and cultural activity. The aim of the information society is to gain competitive advantage internationally, through using information technology (IT) in a creative and productive way. The knowledge economy is its economic counterpart, whereby wealth is created through the economic exploitation of understanding. People who have the means to partake in this form of society are sometimes called digital citizens. This is one of many dozen labels that have been identified to suggest that humans are entering a new phase of society.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Kubernetes & AI - Beauty and the Beast !?! @KCD Istanbul 2024Tobias Schneck
As AI technology is pushing into IT I was wondering myself, as an “infrastructure container kubernetes guy”, how get this fancy AI technology get managed from an infrastructure operational view? Is it possible to apply our lovely cloud native principals as well? What benefit’s both technologies could bring to each other?
Let me take this questions and provide you a short journey through existing deployment models and use cases for AI software. On practical examples, we discuss what cloud/on-premise strategy we may need for applying it to our own infrastructure to get it to work from an enterprise perspective. I want to give an overview about infrastructure requirements and technologies, what could be beneficial or limiting your AI use cases in an enterprise environment. An interactive Demo will give you some insides, what approaches I got already working for real.
Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
PHP Frameworks: I want to break free (IPC Berlin 2024)Ralf Eggert
In this presentation, we examine the challenges and limitations of relying too heavily on PHP frameworks in web development.
