 Pronouns used to ask questions to gain
information.
 Interrogative pronouns are:
- Who - Whom
- What - Whose
- Which

3. Remember!
• Do not be confused with what most elementary school
teachers call the “5 W’s – who, what, where, why, and
when,” and also “how” because in reality, these are NOT
all INTERROGATIVE PRONOUNS.
• They are not interrogative pronouns just because they are
words that start with W/WH and are in questions!

4. WHO
- This pronoun refers to people.
- It functions as a subject in the sentence.
Example:
Who is your favorite singer?
Who were the characters in the story?

5. WHOM
- This pronoun also refers to people.
- It functions as an object in the sentence.
Example:
To whom was my paper given?
For whom is the song dedicated?

6. WHOSE
- This pronoun also refers to people.
- It functions as a possessive pronoun in the
sentence which expresses the idea of belonging to.
Example:
Whose books are these?
Whose is that burger?

7. WHAT
- This pronoun refers to things.
Example:
What is your name?
What was the title of the song?
What are your plans today?
What time is it?

8. WHICH
- This pronoun refers to things as well.
- It used to ask between options or choices.
Example:
Which is your shirt?
Which work was better, his or hers?
Which girl is his sister?

9. See if you can identify all of
the interrogative pronouns.
Today, I was getting ready to go to the movie theatre. I thought
to myself, “What is playing at the movies this afternoon?” What I
wanted to see was a comedy, and I was glad to see that the movie
which was playing was one of my favorites. When was the movie?
Three o’clock. What time did I get there? I actually arrived a half
hour late, which I was not very happy about. Who did I go with?
My sister – who was running a bit late. Whatever!
