4. Consumer Data 1: 65% of Consumers Continued the
Gift-giving Behavior During the Pandemic
• During the Pandemic, Over 60% of Gift-giving Behaviors Continue: Taiwanese consumers are both hospitable and friendly.
Even in the midst of the pandemic, with safety a priority, 65% of consumers still send gifts as a token of appreciation. Among
them, 6% of consumers increased their level of hospitality and continued to maintain their relationships during the pandemic by
sending gifts.
• The Rate of Gift-giving Increases in The 20th Age Group and Decreases in The 50th Age Group: The proportion of
consumers aged 20 to 29 who have increased their gift-giving (8%) is higher than other age groups; on the other hand, the
proportion of consumers aged 50 to 59 is lower than before the pandemic, with 37% saying they have reduced the frequency of
gift-giving.

5. Consumer Data 2: 66% of Consumers Buy Gifts Online,
Direct Delivery is Highly Favored by Mature Group
• Buying Gifts Online Surpasses Physical Purchases By A Wide Margin: For those who sent gifts during the pandemic, 66% of
them were purchased online, and 40% of them were even sent directly to the recipient.
• Mature People Use Contactless Online Shopping To Send Gifts Higher Than Other Age Groups: It is worth noting that even
though the number of gifts sent by consumers aged 50-59 is lower than before the pandemic, the proportion of those who
bought and sent gifts online (43%) is higher than that of all consumers (40%).
• Sending gifts through the delivery service is higher for the 20th generation (60%) and 50th generation (58%) than for all
generations (57%).

6. Consumer Data 3: The Most Preferred Choice For Gift Giving
is The Large Shopping Site
• Large Shopping Sites Are The First Choice For Buying Gifts: Even for gift-giving purposes, consumers still prefer large
shopping sites for online gift-giving channels, with 70% of consumers preferring them. This is followed by C2C sites, which are
preferred by more than half of consumers.
• Selection Store Sites Are Less Than 20% Favored: The online selection stores, which consumers perceive as more sophisticated
and quality, and even created for gift-giving, are not among the top three preferred channels for consumers. Among them,
about 18% of the brand websites provide only single products, while 13% of the concept store websites provide higher-
designed products.

• Sense of Ritual in Pandemic: According to previous EOL pandemic reports, it is suggested that when consumers
spend more time at home and feel burned out or stressed due to the lack of change, brands can upgrade their
products and services to create an unforgettable consumer experience for consumers. By extension, consumers also
seem to be willing to offer gifts (65%) to bring warmth to friends and family during this time.

10. When speaking of the puffs in Taiwan, it's always easy
to think of the brand Yi-Mei. Although many flavors
have been launched since the 1980s, yet the original
milk and chocolate flavors are still the most popular. In
addition, the product is widely favored among young
and old and it's ovo-lacto vegetarians friendly, making
it a popular choice among consumers.

2. The Ever-green Brand: Yi-Mei Cream Puff
From the sales list, we can see that foreign brands and
local brands are evenly matched. Doritos, featuring
Mexican tortilla chips, can be used not only as a snack,
but also in cooking, which is widely used, and tortilla
chips are rare among local snacks, so they are
preferred by consumers.
Pringles, a popular choice in canned potato chips,
features a packaging format that prevents the chips
from being crushed, makes them easy to eat and store,
and is the best choice for young people when enjoying
drama and parties.

1. Competitiveness of Foreign Brands Gradually Increased
The Potato Chips launched by HY Foods has been
hotly discussed on the Internet since its launch
because its appeal is based on the local snack
“oyster omelet” style, but the lack of the real oyster
taste of the snack is heavily questioned. However, its
unique taste has attracted consumers to try, and its
convincing good flavor making it the top seller on the
list.
From the shopping cart analysis, it can be seen
that the purchase combinations of cross-brand
preferences usually have a specific flavor or old-
fashioned flavor preferences.
For example, consumers who choose Cadina will
also tend to choose Potato (Oyster Omelet),
those who choose Lays are willing to try other
brands of potato chips, and those who choose
Pea Crackers are inclined to choose Shrimp Strips,
which also has a long brand history.

Except for those with special qualifications such as low
and middle-income households, all citizens can
purchase a Triple Stimulus Voucher worth $3,000 for
$1,000.
In comparison to the mobile payment penetration rate,
the consumer's usage of digital payment tools should
be higher. Therefore, the digital voucher bundling rate
of only 8% in 2020 highlights the fact that stores and
chain companies are offering discounts for a hardcopy
version of vouchers to effectively increase consumers'
willingness to receive hardcopy.

14. The Four Main Points to Focus on
Regarding Quintuple Stimulus Vouchers
• The NT$5,000 Spending Credit Must be Observed to See If the Consumer Considers It as Additional Income
• As a result of a more severe pandemic in 2021 and an increase in the number of people who suffered economic losses due to its impact, brands will need
to observe the overall unemployment rate and the extent of the income impact to estimate the change in consumer allocation for this stimulus voucher.
• According to the autonomous survey of Dr. Lien-Ti Bei from NCCU, consumers who do not see the stimulus voucher as "extra money" are more likely to
spend on daily necessities. Therefore, it is suggested that brands should provide "extra bonuses" to stimulate more dynamic spending.
• Reducing the Consideration Time for Bonded Digital or Physical Vouchers May Affect the Strategy Layout
It is expected that the government will actively promote the bonding of digital payment tools with vouchers under the strategy of
promoting digital payment. How to identify and provide digital bonding-related promotions will require a corresponding method. If the
stimulus vouchers can be used in cooperation with payment tools provided by channels this year, it will also help the companies to adjust
their short-term channel strategies to benefit from this wave of solutions.
• Individual Purchases and Collective Purchases
According to the Ministry of Economy's assessment, when Triple Stimulus Vouchers were issued in 2020, there was a situation where
families used their vouchers together as a collective. Therefore, as the voucher amount per person is increased this year and the total
amount that can be used by a family of four is up to NT$20,000, there will be more changes in the resource allocation scenario. As
consumers are more concerned about their home environment due to the pandemic, it is worth paying attention to whether this will bring
business opportunities for high-priced home appliances or other goods and services shared by families.
• Set the End Of The Year, Winter, The Next Spring Season Planning: Department Store Anniversary, E-commerce Annual
Festival, New Year, Spring Festival, etc.
The release of 2020 triple stimulus vouchers coincided with the summer holiday season, which is conducive to consumer spending on travel
and leisure. However, in 2021, the timing of the release is skewed towards the end of the year and the beginning of the next year. Therefore,
it is worthwhile for brand operators to review the usage of stimulus vouchers in the fourth quarter of last year to come up with more
appropriate marketing or promotional plans. It is expected that physical and e-commerce annual celebrations, end-of-year dinners, gift-
giving, and New Year's Eve spending mentality will influence decisions.
