44. Konecranes, a global manufacturer operating in more than 400 locations, needed to harmonize their business communications and collaboration systems to realize the vision of one global company. Results Unified Communications as a Cloud Service Yields High Return for Manufacturer Business Situation Solution Konecranes turned to Avanade to help deliver a global Unified Communication system. By exploring multiple scenarios, leveraging Avanade’s Business Benefits Calculator and Estimating Model, it was determined that the most beneficial option, both from a financial and functional perspective, was to provide Unified Communications as a Cloud service to the client’s 8000 employees. By migrating email services and adding functionality such as chat, conferencing, presence and project workspaces provided by the Microsoft BPOS-S cloud service, Konecranes will receive an estimated return of 7.5M€ in 3 years. The system is also easily extendable to customers, partners, suppliers and future acquisitions to further improve collaboration across groups
45. Swiftly Reduce Costs with Enterprise Deployment in Less than 4 months Business Situation This company’s corporate intranet was housed on a content management platform that was not longer supported by the software publisher. Capturing, organizing and sharing over 90,000 assets, artifacts and documents for use by thousands of employees is mission critical. FinancialServices Solution Microsoft and Avanade collaborated to build a new portal solution using Sharepoint hosted in the cloud using Microsoft Online Services. The solution includes a secondary disaster recovery data center, self-service site creation and document recovery, secure 128-bit encryption with in-line virus scanning, and leverages the organizations single sign-on capability. Results In addition to a project savings of $2.3M over three years—half of which delivered in year 1—this solution significantly improves their technology underpinnings. 28
46. Origin Digital, industry leader in live IP broadcasts, on-demand publishing, and portal production, wanted to create a more scalable transcoding workflow environment that delivered the same high performance its customers enjoyed but with lower operating expense, easier management, and without requiring additional capital expenditures for underutilized resources. Results Mission Critical Application Elevated to the Cloud Business Situation Solution Working with Avanade, Origin Digital built its Cloudcoder application, using the Microsoft Visual Studio® 2008 development system with Azure and SQL Azure, in about two months. The Cloudcoder integrates into the Origin Digital central management platform while offloading much of the processing to the cloud. Customers upload digital files to the Origin Digital network, and the Odaptor calls the Cloudcoder service, which trans-codes the file. By building the Cloudcoder on the Windows Azure platform, Origin Digital gained real-time scalability, and reduced administration, time-to-market, and costs. We’re seeing significant reductions (in some cases ½) in computing resource cost for comparable workflows by using the Cloudcoder running on Windows Azure.

Editor's Notes
Cloud Computing Can Cut Costs, Yet Executives Perceive Inherent Security RisksExecutives around the globe are facing a conundrum. In the midst of widespread economic turmoil, decision-makers must reduce costs and widely recognize cloud computing as a viable way to reduce capital expenditures and operational costs. But they are unwilling to switch from internally owned and managed IT systems to cloud computing technologies due to perceived fears. In so doing, these leaders are inadvertently missing the potential business benefits of cloud computing. Cloud enables companies to be more responsive. In a fast-paced, rapidly evolving global economy, the ability to respond quickly to the needs of customers, markets and opportunities represents a significant market differentiator. Cloud offers access to technologies that help companies connect. This drives deeper and more effective relationships with partners and customers. Cloud computing enables specialization. By tapping technologies available as a service instead of owning and managing all IT systems, companies can invest more of their time and resources in focusing on what truly differentiates them in the marketplace.
What the cloud means?Fundamental change in how IT services are provisioned and consumedEasier to outsource and specializeDistribute risk and focus on the coreTurns capital expenditure into operational expenditureImproves time to market; reduces entrance and exit costsDistributed on demand infrastructure and accessPortfolio Assessment – Help clients identify, quantify and rationalize cloud opportunities. Final deliverable is a report containing guidance on the approach to use for selecting on-premise vs. hosted vs. cloud and matrix of the applications analyzed.Application Assessment – Analyze a single application for suitability and opportunity to re-platform or migrate to Azure. Deliverables of this service include a detailed analysis of the application, a vision/scope and approach document, and an estimate to complete the work.Application Re-Platform – “Lift and shift” a client’s their existing application onto Azure. Applicable when clients simply want to get an existing application out of their data center and onto a cloud platform without investing in re-architecting to take advantage of cloud-specific benefits. Application Build/Migration –Build a new client application or re-architect a client’s existing application to not only run on, but fully leverage Windows Azure. This approach enables applications to leverage cloud-specific capabilities such as on-demand elasticity, stateless operations, and federated identity.Community Applications – Build 1:few applications for clients to offer into their partner community/eco-system. Scenarios for this type of application include medical research, supply chain integration, or payment clearinghouses as examples. These applications allow organizations to share data and participate in processes across boundaries seamlessly.SaaS Offerings – Build industry solutions that Avanade and/or Accenture sells on a pay- per-use basis. Examples might include Claims Components, Connected Commerce, Digital Marketing, Property Management, and the Fare Card Management solutions.ISV Offerings –This service targets a small, strategic group of ISV’s who wish to enter the SaaS marketplace but may lack the technical skill, delivery capacity or business model understanding to do so. Our role here will include solution delivery, but may also involve operating the SaaS business on their behalf. An example of this would be offering non-production SAP environments on Azure (with or without Accenture’s industry offerings on top of SAP).Creates new markets and new competitors
In a business environment filled with an increasing number of competitors, companies need to differentiate themselves more than ever. One way for them to accomplish this involves focusing on their core expertise – what they do best. Management consultant Geoffrey A. Moore emphasized the importance of focusing on a company’s “core” in his best-selling book, Dealing with Darwin. In that book, Moore stressed how essential it was to understand the difference between core and context. For Moore, the core represented whatever a company does better than anyone. Everything else needs to be viewed as “context” and how it can help the core achieve and maintain its competitive edge. Some of what is considered context – things that support a business but do not contribute to its core differentiation – might be prime candidates for cloud computing. By sending certain functions cloud-ward, businesses can focus more on the core – product innovation, customer relationships, strategic business growth initiatives, and more. It can allot more valuable time, resources and attention to specializing in its core area. Cloud makes exploration and entry into new geographic markets and product segments faster, cheaper and less risky. And dedicated resources can be shifted from the mundane to focus on innovation.More than two-thirds of the respondents in Avanade’s global cloud computing survey said the cloud would allow them to react more quickly to market conditions and competitors. And 70% of the survey respondents indicate that cloud would improve their ability to be more flexible. All this allows a company to focus on what it does well, while improving technology performance onsite. From a technology standpoint, cloud computing offers companies new opportunities. And it allows some of its IT risk to be shared by a third party.
