The Foreign-Born Population in the
United States
• Foreign-born population increased from 9.6 million in
    1970 to 40.0 million in 2010
• Today’s foreign born are concentrated in several
states, especially in CA, NY, TX and FL
• However, greater movement outside these traditional
    “gateway states”
• Some evidence immigration to the United States
    slowed after 2005
• Foreign-born households are larger, include more
children under 18, and are more likely to be
    multigenerational

                                                            1
