How can we
recognise
different
„Cultures?
By studying the architecture,
we can recognise certain
themes or „typical
features”… for example….
Islamic Architecture is clean,
symmetrical, uses domes and
minarets……
Whereas „Hindu” architecture is often
heavily decorated, and uses towers
and open spaces
The cultures of the deserts are
often nomadic…
Whereas by the great rivers, these cultures are
ancient and permanent, and forever building
on top of each other, fighting for space
The Buddhists of the north live in
simple, quiet settlements to match
their lifestyle….
Whereas the jungle cultures of the south are
colourful and noisy, and decorate their
buildings as wildly as they can
India is a country of „binary
opposites”, or extremes….
 Such as:
 Rich/Poor: The rich are very rich, the poor are
some of the poorest in the world
 Modern and traditional
 Hinduism and Islam (as well as thousands of
    other religions
 Mountain and desert
 City and Jungle… can you think of any more?
 How does a country become so extreme???
