Ian Turton holds a PhD in Geophysics from the University of Edinburgh. He worked as an academic researcher studying large and complex datasets in the field of GeoComputation at the University of Leeds and Pennsylvania State University (PSU) before joining Envitia as Senior GI consultant.
He was a founder of the GeoTools project which forms the foundation to many highly successful open source java geospatial projects, such as GeoServer. He is a founding, charter member of the Open Source Geospatial Foundation (OSGeo), which provides an umbrella organization for a variety of open source projects and runs the FOSS4G conference series.
