It is my favorite time at the West Point Grey Community Centre once again –
the Spring and Summer season! It’s also our busy season of the year, with
the kids out of school and the days long.
Speaking of school, the youth scholarship application process is open and
awarded in June so make sure to get those applications in!
Once the kids are out of school we will be offering Summer Day Camps
as always. Last year, many camps sold out so please ensure you sign up
early! We will be offering a variety of Summer Day Camps included French
immersion, out-trips, skim boarding, tennis and other fun activities for ages 3 to 13 years old. We will also be offering our
licensed Summer Day Camp throughout the summer. There are a few new programs for the adults as well, such as Gardening
and Food Safe.
Our extended summer hours at Trimble Park will continue once again this year. The pool will be open from Monday through
Saturday and every Wednesday we will host free Family Fun nights at the park. As it was such a big hit last year, we will be
having our 2nd annual Movie in the Park on August 29th. Also, don’t forget about Point Grey Fiesta! The West Point Grey
Community Association has long been a sponsor and we would love for you to join us in the parade on Saturday, June 20th!
In February we said good-bye to one of our favorite staff members, Shannon Brown, who is unfortunately leaving us for an
opportunityatanothercentre. ShannonspecializedinAdult,FitnessandPotteryprogramsandplayedabighandinassistingwith
our Special Events. Shannon’s dedication and positive attitude will be missed! We wish her all of the best in her next endeavor.
This will be my last President’s message as I have now stepped down from the Board. It has been a great three years. I am most
proud of all our Special Events, facility upgrades and the progress we have made with the Park Board joint operating agreement
negotiations. IwouldliketothankalloftheBoardmembers,staffandvolunteersthatmademytimeontheBoardsomemorable.

Seeing Spots – An Art Project To Deter Birds From Colliding With
Windows at West Point Grey Community Centre.
In October 2014, the Park Board Fieldhouse studio resident artists Geneviève Raiche-Savoie and Jesse Garbe were introduced
to front office staff of the West Point Grey Community Centre to help find a solution to birds hitting the centre’s windows due to
their highly reflective surface. The centre’s main facade consists of four large windows located next to a children playground.
These artists from the Department of Bird Safety proposed to create an art piece on the windows that will deter birds from
colliding with the building. This temporary installation of dots will take visual notes from the international artist Damian Hirst’s
spot paintings and the dot pattern created by Feather Friendly, a bird collision company specializing in glass deterrents. They
will be working with West Point Grey community members this Spring in placing the multi-colored dots onto the windows to
offer an enjoyable aesthetic component that will be observable by both humans and birds. Go to www.westpointgrey.org/
events-listing/ for more info.
This project will be facilitated through the West Regional Arts Programmer and West Point Grey Community Centre Staff, who
are all very excited to launch this pilot project leading up to Vancouver’s Bird Week 2015. We plan to have more site installations
of the Seeing Spots at Community Centres and Civic buildings during bird week. These projects fall in line with the Vancouver

Day Camps
Registration Information
Registration for Day Camps begins March 10th until camps
arefull.Youcanregisterinperson,byphoneoronourwebsite.
We recommend putting your name on the wait list if camps
are full as sometimes participants withdraw, or we are able to
accommodate campers by adding more leaders.
Refunds
Our staff ratios and out trip bookings are based on our
registration numbers. For this reason, refunds are only given
with one full week notice.
Late Pick Up
If you are more than 5 minutes late picking up your child,
they will be taken to the after care location and you will be
charged $8 for one day of after care.
Waiver Forms
Waiver forms can be downloaded from our Facebook page,
our website (westpointgrey.org) or picked up in person at
WPG. These forms must be brought with your child on the
first day of camp and filled out completely. To complete the
form you will need your child’s Care Card number (this is a
must), family physician name, address, telephone number,
swimming ability and allergy/medication information. Visitors
to Canada must provide proof of private medical coverage.
Without this information, you can not drop off your child as
we can not leave the Centre without this critical information.
Ages
Children must be the appropriate age for each camp.
Staff ratios are based on the age of the participants so no
exceptions will be made. Please note the age restrictions
for all camps.
Sunscreen
Leaders try to encourage the campers to apply sunscreen
during the day, but are often met with resistance. Please
applysunscreenbeforechildrencometocampandputsome
sunscreen in their backpacks for use during the day.
Snacks and Lunches
We encourage campers to bring a litter-less lunch with
re-useable containers. Although we cannot guarantee a
peanut free camp, we encourage campers not to bring food
containing nuts. If your child has a severe nut allergy, please
alert us ahead of time. It’s important to pack a water bottle
with your child each day.
Pictures
By the end of the Summer, we usually have a large collection
of pictures of the children in camp that we would like to
possibly use for next year, on our website, in the brochure
andoursocialmedia.Weaskyourpermissiontodosoonthe
waiver form so please make sure to fill that part of the waiver
form out and mark your preference clearly. If you would like a
copy of a picture, please let the leaders know and we would
be happy to email it to you.
Our Leaders
The majority of our leaders are University and Secondary
School Students. All leaders are required to have basic first
aid, a current police record check, attend city wide training
workshops, and in-house training. Our Senior leaders are
university students who have had at least one Summer of
