Is Twitter just a fad?

“We don’t have a choice on
whether we do social media,
the question is how well we do it.”
                          Erik Qualman
More important than Facebook?
Why Twitter is different

People use Twitter and Facebook for different
things and they deserve that recognition.

They are different platforms, but engaging
your audience is still vital
Why Twitter is different

1. Users do not need to ‘follow’ you to see your Tweets
Why Twitter is different

1. Users do not need to ‘follow’ you to see your Tweets

Well-targeted Tweets, using keywords and hash tags, can
have a reach beyond your immediate circle of followers.

As well as potential visitors to the website, you can also
reach potential clients, journalists, investors and employees.
Why Twitter is different

2. Tweets are limited to 140 characters.

2. Tweets are limited to 140 characters.

This means you need to write ‘tight’ copy.

If you want your Tweets to be retweeted, you need to use
even fewer characters.

Tweets have a much greater impact on SEO than Facebook.

Sharing your links via Twitter can increase your overall
inbound links and your organic results.
Twitter – 10 Key Tips
1. Do keep tweets short - 120 characters max will allow for maximal Retweet potential.

2. Do use the # (hash) tag – many users search Twitter by categories.

3. Do tag where appropriate (you do not need to ‘follow’ someone to tag them).

4. Do use Twitter for brand monitoring – what are people saying about you?

5. Do share stuff – mix up Tweets about your own content, with other content you like.

6. Do Retweet your followers’ Tweets when they have good, shareable content.

7. Do provide useful information – the better your content is, the more likely it will be shared.

8. Do interact – both with your followers and with any conversations within your industry.

9. Do target power Tweeters – get their attention by tagging them with thanks or approval.

10. Do join conversations that look interesting – find them using Twitter search.

How often to Tweet?
• There is no right answer for how often a business should
  Tweet.

• This will depend on your business, your fans and your goals.

• You can Tweet more often than you update Facebook.

• I would recommend aiming for 2-5 Tweets per day,
depending on what content you have to share.

• Don’t be afraid to repeat Tweets.
When to Tweet?
• Research has shown that the most likely times to be
Retweeted are early evening or middle of the night.

• Schedule your Tweets using Tweetdeck or Hootsuite

• Use Hootsuite to automate timing of your Tweets
What to Tweet?
• Share quality, relevant content

• Stay on topic unless there is a good reason not to

• Mix it up, using a combination of promoting your own
  product, with sharing other content

• Develop your style – don’t be afraid to use the first person

• Use photos and video
Start the conversation
Tag other Twitter users…
Join the conversation
Look for conversations to contribute to…

•
Monitor your brand
Look for mentions of your brand…

•
Hootsuite/Tweetdeck
• Run multiple accounts

• Schedule Tweets

• Track mentions

• Search for Tweets in your specialist area
Hootsuite
Tweetdeck
Conclusion

• Social Media is not a fad
• Twitter can be highly valuable
• A well-designed Profile is advantageous
• Regular activity is vital
• Join the conversation
Thank You
