Editor's Notes

  1. Eisenhower speech, 1953, ATOMS FOR PEACE
  2. The core mission of the Agency is thus to enhance security and development in its Member States. All states, no matter what their stage of development, have the right to benefit from nuclear technology and the responsibility not to misuse it. This insistence on the rights and responsibilities of all Member States is central to the Agency.
  3. “ To increasingly promote tangible socio-economic impact by contributing directly in a cost-effective manner to the achievement of the major sustainable development priorities of each country.”
  4. All Member States are eligible to participate in the TC programme. All Member States benefit from the TC programme, whether directly through projects or indirectly through activities for the global good; whether by receiving direct support or by being the source of equipment and experts. In parallel, all Member States share the responsibility for the programme, and provide political, financial or implementation support. 70% of the capacity building function of the Agency is delivered through the technical cooperation programme.
  5. Promoting Science & Technology The IAEA is working to to fighting poverty, sickness, and pollution of the earth's environment, and to other global "Millennium Goals" for a safer and better future. Some examples of this are listed above. Nuclear technologies reaches into almost every aspect of our daily lives. A few facts are: Nuclear power generates about 16 percent of the world’s electricity; Someone receives radioisotope treatment for medical diagnosis every third second; that is 35,000 persons every day; 3 million persons are treated with radiotherapy each year against cancer; 40 countries now use irradiation to improve the hygiene, safety and quality of food; Radiation is used in scores of industrial applications: sterilizing syringes and other hospital supplies; testing the quality of steel for cars and trucks; and checking for production flaws in airplane engines.
