El principio de la autonomía progresiva implica que las personas menores de edad también pasan a ejercer progresivamente sus responsabilidades. En ese marco, funciona un sistema de Justicia Penal para Adolescentes (o Justicia Penal Juvenil) en el entendido de que la persona adolescente puede enfrentar las consecuencias de sus actos y asumir la responsabilidad por la comisión de un delito. Para lograr ello, es importante comprender la naturaleza, los alcances y los fines del sistema penal para adolescentes, a fin de avanzar hacia la especialización, hacia un cambio que dé lugar al cumplimiento de los fines socioeducativos, para proporcionar a los/las adolescentes en conflicto con la ley la posibilidad de un nuevo proyecto de vida y la reducción de la reincidencia. Solo a través de ello, se podrá lograr un sistema de justicia penal para Adolescentes que sea especializado, justo y eficiente.
