Poster:magazine analysis
1. Red on Black – Connotes sex and
love, but at the same time connotes
danger, which is stereotypical to the
Horror/Thriller genre. It connotes
death.
Bold colours– connotes female
dominance which links to the
Final Girl theory proposed by
Carol Clover
Title - ’Knock Knock’ is quite
fragile suggests the need for
safety, both in the fact that
her world could be knocked
down. This links to women
in general in society as they
are notorious for being the
passive compared to the
active male.
Direct gaze- staring into
the audience to create a
sense of empowerment
and wants the audience to
watch the film. It is quite
inticing.
Black and White – suggests a
binary opposition between life
and death, a common theme in
the Horror/Thriller genre.
Laura Mulvey Male Gaze – so
traditional/archaic that it subverts to
Carol Clovers theory.
‘Coming Soon’ – suggests
ambiguity which conforms to the
conventions of a teaser poster
Binary opposition – shows the good
and evil which are themes in most
narratives. Within a horror, it shows the
juxtaposition between life and death,
two visions that clash together.
Everything is B&W but the lips –
it connotes how women are
presented in film creating a
discourse of how we view
women in society. This can also
be linked to Propp’s character
types and how women are seen
to be weaker and the ‘Damsel in
distress’
No link to convergence – doesn’t
have a link to a website/social
media platform. This normally
opens the target audience wider.
2. Flying creatures – This can be linked
to a the biblical idea of a swarm of
locusts. This is a stereotypical theme
found in Horror/Thriller films as the
use of religion can make viewers feel
uncomfortable.
This poster is conventional as
in Horror/Thriller films, the
villain never has to be in
human form, especially in
supernatural films. The villain
can be a presence and
something we cannot see. This
scares the audience further as
it leaves the audience with an
enigma code, stereotypically
found in Horror or Thriller
films.
Based on a true story – The
inclusion of this makes
verisimilitude which further
creates realism. This links to
uses and gratifications as
viewers watch films like this
for surveillance reasons and
makes viewers question their
own lives.
Face – It has eyes rolled back and is
contorted in pain. This connotes a
regular Horror narrative as pain and
fear are common themes to appear.
Darkness – All black
background connotes evil.
However, the black has taken
over suggesting that there is
very little faith for the main
character featured on the
poster.
Actors in Horror/Thriller films are usually un-
established in the film industry. This is seen on
this poster as the prominent character is
engulfed by all of the dark around her.
3. Setting of a graveyard – This is to
signify that death and decay will
be largely present within the film.
There is a central protagonist
positioned at the front. There are
younger characters to the left and
right suggesting the hegemonic
norms of a male character being
more prominent in the narrative.
People to the side are looking away
at the side which creates an enigma
code, leaving the audience on the
edge of their seat. Whereas the man
has direct gaze with the audience to
almost warn them that dangers are
coming.
Bold yellow text at the bottom
suggesting happiness. However, it is
situated towards the bottom further
connoting the doom and gloom
within the film. The text
superimposes the names of the
characters.
Low-Key Lighting is used to create
a sinister idea connoting that all is
not well. From the poster it is
clear that there is pathetic fallacy
creating a foreboding feel.
‘Sleep’ being used as a metaphor for death. This
connects to how a tombstone is a universal symbol for
death. Symbolic codes are often found in conventional
Horror/Thriller films.
There are lots of narrative clues in
this poster to give the audience
an insight to what is to come in
the film…
There is an action code telling
the audience that something has
happened – a man is in the
graveyard opening a coffin.
