The study examined the use of tablets versus desktop computers in collaborative learning activities. Pairs of students worked on tasks using each device. Automatic metrics from session logs and qualitative analysis were used to analyze collaboration quality. Sessions with tablets showed more intense and unbalanced workspace activity compared to desktop sessions, indicating lower collaboration quality when using tablets. Students were reluctant to take advantage of tablet features and used them similar to desktops. The lack of tablet experience hindered effective collaboration compared to familiar desktops.
