What Are The Five Senses
All vertebrates possess five senses of sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch through which they can
experience and make sense of world. Without our senses, we wouldn't have any idea what was going
on around us and the human body would be functionally useless. Each of the senses therefore
provides important functions and serves an intended purpose. The sense of smell is a chemical sense.
It is called chemical sense as it detects the chemicals in the environment and it works on larger
distances. The sense of smell is a primal sense for humans as well as animals. From an evolutionary
standpoint, it is one of the most ancient of senses. Smell (or Olfaction) allows vertebrates and other

The Strengths And Weaknesses Of Sense Perception
Sense perception can be defined as how we see and interpret the world through our five senses –
sight, hearing, touch, taste and smell. They are an important source of knowledge since they enable
us most of the times to be conscious of the outside world. Perception consists of both sensation and
interpretation. Sensation is the stimulation of a sensory receptor which produces neural impulses
which the brain then interprets as visual image, sound, taste, pain, etc. Interpretation is how the

The picture of reality that is around us is always constructed in our minds. Since we don't have
access to other people's minds we fail to see their reality. The only way we can understand what is
real in their world is to use our imagination. Our imagination serves us like a pair of shoes that lets
us step into their world. The more we walk in their shoes, the more we know their world, and
what is really in it. However, people tend to restrict reality and define it only using their five

"The soul is the cause or source of the living body... it is the source of movement, it is the end, it is
the essence of the whole living body (De Anima, 27)." As demonstrated in this quote from De
Anima by Aristotle, the soul is essential to living things. And it is the soul that makes a body live,
perceive and think and is therefore the actuality of the body (De Anima, 24). Aristotle's De Anima
illustrates what the soul is, how it affects perception and what the five senses are.
Substances or material bodies are made up of two parts, which Aristotle refers to as matter and form.
Matter and form do not make up the substance in a literal sense but rather the matter represents the
physical part and form the non–physical attributes of a substance (Barnes, 78). The soul is the form
of a body, not the matter. The substance of the soul is ultimately the actuality of a body which puts it
into existence (De Anima, 21).

Many kids also experience a level of negative reinforcement when learning to read, as well. Kids
learn that they are rewarded when they do well with their reading, and later on in their studies it
becomes more of an automatic response. People become conditioned to expect positive or
negative reinforcement for behavior. A good example as an adult, would be a person would expect

The following paper is an explanation of our five senses. How they work and why do we have

The optic nerve splits behind the eye, where the right side of both retinas goes to the right side of
the brain and the left side of retinas goes to the left side of the brain. This turns the image right side
up. | Smell is another one of our five senses. We can detect a variety of more than 10,000 smells.
With our sense of smell, we are able to detect different emotions as well. We release a certain
chemical called pheromones. Once airborne, we cannot smell pheromones, yet our brain will detect
