Subject: President's Update - July 2015
July 2015
Colleagues,
The summer thus far has been full of activity. July in particular was very busy at the College, highlighted by
JazzFest Cleveland. Nearly 29,000 patrons, an increase of 40% over 2014, enjoyed festive events and
performances at Playhouse Square’s Hanna, Ohio and Palace Theaters and the U.S. Bank Plaza.
I met with faculty members Ashlee Brand and Amanda Hanley for an update on the mathematics and English
initiatives designed to transform how we place and teach individuals in these subjects. Expected outcomes
include greater success in courses, expedited completion through certificate programs and pathways that align
with programs of study.
At the invitation of Vice President Joe Biden, I joined a delegation of individuals including Jack Schron, Marsha
Mockabee, Grace Kilbane, Helen Williams, and Quentin McCorvey at the White House to debrief on America’s
Promise, President Obama’s plan to provide free community college education.
In continuing my work with the selection panel for the Cleveland Community Police Commission, I joined fellow
co-chair Colleen Cotter from the Legal Aid Society for several media interviews to discuss the application
process. The panel will recommend to Mayor Frank Jackson ten individuals to serve on the commission.
Below are highlights of various activities related to our institutional focus areas:
STUDENT SUCCESS & COMPLETION
America Welding Certification
Six students received the American Welding Certification (AWS) as a result of passing the online AWS module
with a score of 90% or higher. These students participated in a ten-week Fast Track Welding Boot Camp. The
2
boot camp is a 280-hour program that prepares students for careers in the welding industry by providing
fundamental skills training in STICK, MIG, and TIG welding technologies. The certification led to several
workforce successes for these students, who have become employed or promoted with local companies in
various positions throughout the greater Cleveland area.
Machining/Digital Design
Ten students from the ninth cohort of the Right Skills Now Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) Operations
program completed classroom training at the Unified Technologies Center and started an 8-week internship at
Swagelok Company. The Right Skills Now Program incorporates a 180-hour training program combined with a
320-hour paid internship that focuses on the knowledge and skills necessary for employment as an operator on
a CNC mill or lathe.
Culinary Graduate off to Job at Michelin 3-Star Restaurant
Matthew Munaretto graduated this spring with an Associate of Applied Business Degree in Hospitality
Management with a concentration in Culinary Arts. He entered the Intercontinental Hotel Culinary Clash
Challenge, placing fifth out of the final six competitors and used the experience as fuel to propel him on to
much greater things. When Matt was nearing graduation, Chef Maureen challenged him to send his resume to
Alinea, a Michelin 3-star restaurant in Chicago. Matt accepted a job at Alinea as a prep cook and after a week
of hard work and dedication, he was promoted to Chef de Partie Pastry where he is responsible for the last
course, referred to as the “Tropical Mat”, which is plated right on the table in front of guests.
Phi Theta Kappa Recognized at Ohio Region Leadership in Action Conference
Three Metropolitan Campus officers, two advisors and one alumna of the Alpha Zeta Delta Chapter of Phi
Theta Kappa attended the Ohio Region Leadership in Action Conference in Logan, OH. The conference,
sponsored by Hocking College’s Energy Institute, took place on Friday, July 17 and Saturday, July 18.
Attendees participated in fellowship activities, attended workshops related to leadership and organizational
development and networked with other chapters in the region.
The Chapter was recognized with a traveling trophy for the Best Competitive Edge Engagement Rate for the
Ohio Region. The Chapter’s participation rate in Competitive Edge, Phi Theta Kappa’s online leadership
development program, was double that of the second-ranked chapter.
Degree in Three
Degree in Three (D3), the Tri-C branded CUNY-ASAP replication project, will launch this fall with a goal of 500
students. Of that group, to be divided between the Eastern and Western campuses, half of the students will be
in the program (study) group while the rest will represent the control. Students in the D3 study group receive
specialized services delivered on a cohort basis and built around a model of intrusive advising. The intent is to
demonstrate the success of this approach in terms of degree completion within three years. Click here to
obtain additional information about D3.
New Partnerships – College Credit Plus
As the State of Ohio transitions the Post-Secondary Enrollment Options Program (PSEOP) to College Credit
Plus, the College has had ongoing conversations with local school districts to create partnerships. As a result
of these conversations, 35 Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) have been signed by school districts in
Cuyahoga and surrounding counties. Conversations will continue to hopefully increase the number of MOUs
before the start of fall semester. Tri-C continues to be the largest institution in Ohio providing an early start to
earning college credit, serving over 2,000 high school students each academic year. The majority of these
students attend a class at one of our four campuses or the Brunswick University Center. Under College Credit
Plus, the College will offer a total of 30 Tri-C courses at the following high schools this fall: Lawrence School,
3
Cleveland Heights, Rocky River, Fairview Park, Holy Name, Berea-Midpark, and Parma Senior High School.
The courses will be taught by qualified adjunct faculty members.
2015 Recording Arts Graduate Featured in Scene Magazine (June 24-30)
Joshua Jesty, a Tri-C Recording Arts student and singer/songwriter, just released his fourth EP recording, It's
Your Fault Everything's Alright. Joshua studied music at the Berklee College of Music with an emphasis on
guitar and songwriting before returning to Tri-C to study the recording arts. Cleveland Scene's Matt Wardlaw
writes: "Though the configuration of players surrounding Joshua has changed, one thing that has remained
consistent is his output of quality songs that, lyrically, often mix humor with unfiltered honesty.” Click here to
listen.
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
Parma Run/Walk to Support Tri-C’s Student Scholarship Fund
The Western Campus hosted and sponsored the Fifth Annual Parma Run/Walk for Pierogies. Parma City
Council President Sean Brennan organizes the 5K, which attracted more than 600 participants this year. The
run includes entertainment; visits from local sports team mascots; door prizes; drinks and snacks; gold, silver
and bronze pierogi medals for the top runners; and, of course, pierogis – courtesy of Parma’s own Perla’s
Homemade Delights and the Little Polish Diner. Several Tri-C employees participated in the run and four of
them medaled. A portion of this year’s proceeds will be donated to support Tri-C’s Student Scholarship Fund.
Brunswick University Center School Supply Drive
Brunswick University Center is collecting supplies for United Way of Medina County’s “Stuff the Bus” school
supply drive. One in five children in Medina County do not have the supplies they need for the first day of
school. This United Way campaign helps families in need by alleviating the financial strain of purchasing these
items at the beginning of the school year.
Tri-C JazzFest Attendance Hits a High Note
Overall attendance increased 40% (28,000) over last year with audiences for ticketed indoor concerts topping
7,500 ($187,000 gross ticket revenue). However, a steep increase in attendance at the outdoor concerts at
(17,500) accounted for the largest increase in attendance, as well as a modest gain in the number of people
attending community outreach events during the year (3,000). Media coverage was moderate compared to
2015, though with a significant boost coming from JazzFest’s collaboration with WCPN Ideastream, which
again featured festival artists in a special taping of “The Sound of Applause”, which reached an estimated
80,000 homes.
Centers for Learning Excellence Give Back
Staff from the four Centers for Learning Excellence (CLE) gathered at the Greater Cleveland Food Bank in
Cleveland’s Collinwood neighborhood for a daylong retreat, the purpose of which was to review the transition
to the new operations model implemented last fall, to plan additional refinements and share best practices, and
to give back to the community by volunteering for a few hours. The CLEs at Tri-C are campus-based hubs that
support full-time and adjunct faculty. The CLEs are conveniently located on each campus to provide
streamlined access to instructional support for faculty.
Career Speed Dating Event
The inaugural Career Speed Dating event was held on the evening of Wednesday, June 25 at Corporate
College East. Experts from various career and technical fields engaged with students and community members
who came to learn more about particular fields. Students enjoyed being able to rotate tables and discuss
4
additional career opportunities outside of their chosen field, providing them with a wealth of knowledge about
all of the industries present. This event was hosted by the Carl Perkins Program.
Tri-C JazzFest Summer Camp in Full Swing
This year’s Jazz Camp reached its capacity of 30 students, ranging in age from 10 through 18. Taught by jazz
musicians who frequent the Cleveland and Akron jazz scenes, the campers performed in master classes with
top-notch jazz musicians including Dominick Farinacci, John Clayton, Gerald Clayton, Benny Green and Jeff
Hamilton. On Thursday, July 2, the students performed to a full house of parents and diners at Mitchell’s Ice
Cream on West 25th Street. in Ohio City. They also performed on the Cleveland Scene stage at the U.S. Bank
Plaza as part of JazzFest.
AFFORDABILITY
MUREP Aerospace Academy
The Tri-C Foundation hosted a celebration at the District office on Monday, July 20 to recognize PPG
Industries for their generous support and contributions to the Science, Engineering, Mathematics and
Aerospace Academy (SEMAA) program, now known as the MUREP Aerospace Academy (MAA), over the past
decade. Four company representatives, including two chemists, a plant production manager and a community
outreach coordinator, joined us for a ceremonial check presentation and to learn more about Tri-C and youth
and early college programs. All four team members are engaged in community leadership roles within PPG
Industries, such as Young Professionals and the Ohio Women’s Leadership Council. Community support is a
priority for PPG Industries. Gloria Moosmann presented a high-level overview of the College and Foundation
and Dr. JaNice Marshall presented an informational summary on the youth and early college programs. This
program is funded solely by external resources, so support and involvement by our partners is critical to the
success of engaging young people in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Click here for
additional information.
Raymond V. Byrne Scholarship Support
Numerous Tri-C students will receive scholarship support thanks to an exceptionally generous will bequest
from Mr. Raymond V. Byrne. Mr. Byrne was a World War II veteran, a devout Catholic and an avid Cleveland
Indians fan who continued his love of serving others by driving a school bus for the South Euclid/Lyndhurst
School District following his retirement from the engineering field. According to Mr. Byrne's trustee (and
onetime Tri-C student) Jane Holland, Raymond was a very generous man who gave his time to help others in
need. In accordance with Mr. Byrne's wishes, his bequest will benefit scholarships for veteran students as well
as students who attend Tri C as part of the Women in Transition program. The Tri-C Foundation appreciates
Mr. Byrne’s generosity in helping our students achieve their dreams of higher education. His legacy will
continue to live on through the Tri-C students who benefit from this incredible gift.
Ohio Reach Provides Funds for New Mentoring Program
The Tri-C Foundation is grateful for a recent grant award of $20,000 from Ohio Reach to enhance the Tri-C
Foster Scholars Initiative and establish the Tri-C Foster Scholars Mentoring Program. The Mentoring Program,
launching in fall 2015, will provide resources and services to assist students who have aged out of the foster
care system with wraparound support services to help them succeed in earning their degrees. Project Director
Dr. JaNice Marshall also serves as associate vice president for Access and Community Engagement.
John P. Murphy Foundation Funds Television and Video Project
The Tri-C Foundation appreciates the John P. Murphy Foundation’s commitment of support to provide an
employer-responsive experiential learning initiative for media arts students. Funds have been awarded to
support the Armchair Quarterbacks partnership initiative with the College’s Television and Video Services
program and Classic Teleproductions. Students will participate in a wide array of creative and production
5
activities culminating in a weekly professional broadcast, ensuring that students are exposed to and
understand the entire production process for live broadcasts. The Tri-C Foundation is grateful to the John P.
Murphy Foundation for its continued partnership and generous support since 2001 for innovative programs and
essential learning equipment for students.
Renewal of Program Participation for Financial Aid
We are pleased to share that the Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships has successfully completed
and passed the recertification process to continue to award Title IV financial aid. This review, known as the
Program Participation Agreement, is a broad assessment of the College’s policies, procedures and certificate
programs. The U.S. Department of Education has notified the College that the Program Participation
Agreement has been extended through 2018, ensuring the College can continue to award nearly $100 million
in financial aid funds to students each year.
AT&T Continues Long-term Support of Hispanic Scholarships
The Tri-C Foundation is grateful for the continued support of AT&T for Hispanic student scholarships. AT&T
has supported the College for over 23 years. Their recent gift will help more Hispanic students connect to
higher education and succeed on pathways to completion of their degrees and credentials. The $50,000 grant
from AT&T will provide financial assistance for tuition, textbooks and other educational fees and expenses. We
thank Tri-C Foundation Director Mylayna Albright, Vice President of External Affairs at AT&T, for her continued
advocacy and passion for helping more community members achieve their educational and workforce goals.
United Black Fund Supports Gateway to College
The Tri-C Foundation has secured funding from United Black Fund, Inc. to support the purchase of educational
materials and supplies to directly benefit students enrolled in Tri-C’s Gateway to College program. The
program reaches out to students who previously dropped out of high school to give them a second chance at
obtaining a high school diploma and accessing a college education. Participants are dually enrolled in high
school (at Cleveland Metropolitan School District’s Promise Academy) and Tri-C. With support from United
Black Fund, Tri-C is helping to remove financial barriers that prevent many of the participants from obtaining
the tools and supplies necessary for successful completion of the program. The Tri-C Foundation is grateful to
United Black Fund, Inc. for its continued support of the College’s programs and our students.
STRATEGIC MARKETING AND COMMUNICATIONS
New Course Description Pages
Integrated Communications has worked with Information Technology Services (ITS) to automate course
descriptions on Tri-C’s public website. ITS built a tool to pull course descriptions from Banner so that the site is
automatically updated when changes occur. Previously, course descriptions would have to be manually
updated or were linked to PDFs that would quickly become outdated. Buttons will be placed on all of the
program pages which will link to the new course descriptions. ITS will also create a landing page including links
to all of the course descriptions, which will replace the PDF version of the course catalog on our website.
Republican National Convention Host Committee Breakfast
The Republican National Convention host committee breakfast was held on Tuesday, July 15 at the Hospitality
Management Center (HMC). The purpose of the event was to showcase Pura Vida and the HMC facilities,
which the host committee plans to lease as their command central location. Representatives from the
Republican Governors Association and the Petroleum Association were present. Host committee fundraiser
Paige Hahn plans to bring another group in October.
Adult Diploma Program
6
In collaboration with Integrated Communications, College Pathways staff coordinated social media messages,
advertisements in Latino publications, and other marketing materials for the new Adult Diploma grant. A press
release shared details on the Adult Diploma Program, which is funded by the Ohio Department of Education
and targets adults, aged 22 and older, who have not yet earned a high school diploma or GED. Since the ads
have been published, the Adult Diploma Program has received an average of 230 voice mails/telephone calls
and over 200 emails daily from individuals interested in finally earning their high school diploma.
Regional 3D (R3D) & Additive Manufacturing Conference
Integrated Communications assisted in promoting the Regional 3D (R3D) and Additive Manufacturing
Conference held at the Advanced Technology Training Center, which hosted more than 150 participants in
sessions and demonstrations of additive manufacturing (3D printing). One participant was able to 3D-print a
phone case, and the Cleveland Metropolitan School District sent representatives from their Fab Lab. To view
coverage provided by Channel 19 News, please click the link: Channel 19.
Veterans Initiative Awareness Campaign
Two veterans enrolled in the College’s Police Academy were interviewed by WAVE FM 107 about the
College’s Veterans Initiative on June 16. The interviews will be played throughout the month of July on FM 107
as part of a campaign conducted by the Veterans Initiative to increase awareness among potential donors.
WORKFORCE
Machining/Digital Design
A mini job fair was held on July 15 to highlight recent graduates of Workforce, Community & Economic
Development’s CNC Machining and Composites program. Eaton Corporation, Hose Master and Kennametal
were in attendance. The companies interviewed the students for full-time employment and/or 7-week
internships.
Fire Training Academy
Tri-C’s Fire Academy will host a job fair for the St. Andrews, South Carolina Fire Department on August 8 at
the Public Safety Training Center located on the Western Campus. They are looking to hire up to eight
Firefighter/Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs).
Olympic Steel Change Management Workshops
On June 29 and 30, instructors from Tri-C’s Workforce division traveled to Winder, Georgia to facilitate two
separate workshops entitled “Embracing Change” and “Driving Change” for 12 production managers and
supervisors at Cleveland-based Olympic Steel. Although the initial plans were to deliver only one session,
because of the workshops’ overwhelming success, Olympic Steel requested that the instructors stay to deliver
a second session.
Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA)
The Public Safety Institute is now officially in contract with the Commission on Accreditation for Law
Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA) for the two-year self-assessment process for initial accreditation. The
program’s standards are derived from the best practices of professional public safety training academies,
reflecting the current thinking and experiences of training academy practitioners and accreditation experts.
Once implemented it presents, on a continuing basis, a blueprint that promotes the efficient use of resources
and improves service delivery. CALEA accreditation is a means for developing and improving the Institute’s
relationship with the community and will promote superior public safety training services and professional
excellence. This will strengthen the accountability of our academies through a continuum of standards that
clearly define authority, performance, and responsibility while limiting liability and risk exposure.

iCustomer Cares Program
A new training opportunity has been secured with the University Hospitals Medical Surgical Services
department. The iCustomer Cares Program is an instructor-led series of 39 classroom hours that provides soft
skills to employees to assist them in improving their professional and personal management skills. The training
consists of six competencies including work ethic, communication, sensitivity and customer service, time
management, money management and dealing with change. At the conclusion of the training, there will be a
graduation ceremony featuring a guest speaker. Graduates will receive a certificate of completion, pin and
recognition by their supervisors. The Medical Surgical Services department employs over 200 people who are
eligible to participate in the program. It is anticipated that training will be delivered to three cohorts, with the first
cohort scheduled for training August 7 through October 30. Hugh Littleton, senior training specialist, and Rita
Brocco, program manager, will facilitate and manage the program throughout each cohort.
Summer Youth Intern Program
Continuing our partnership with Youth Opportunities Unlimited (Y.O.U.), the Youth Technology Academy (YTA)
has secured 40 summer interns to work in various departments within the College including 10,000 Small
Businesses, SEMAA, YTA and the Advanced Technology Academy. Students will engage in technology-
related jobs working with robotics inventory and building assignments along with clerical and office-related
activities. Located in Playhouse Square, Y.O.U. is Northeast Ohio’s leading youth workforce development
organization. The organization provides workforce preparation, job placement and youth development
programs to at-risk youth ages 14-19 who live with families at or below the poverty level in Cuyahoga County.
AWARDS & RECOGNITIONS
Tri-C Recognized by TrainingIndustry.com
For the fourth year in a row, Tri-C has been recognized by TrainingIndustry.com as a “Top 20 Workforce
Development Company” for training services and technologies in today’s marketplace. TrainingIndustry.com
continuously reviews companies and community colleges that provide customized corporate training services
and conducts an annual assessment to determine suppliers’ experiences and capabilities. In order to be
nominated, companies and colleges must meet specific requirements and submit a comprehensive application
survey. Tri-C’s Workforce division scored high marks in three key areas: depth of subject matter expertise,
industry visibility, innovation and impact, and ability to develop and deliver customized corporate training
services.

15.8.7 president's update, cuyahoga community college - scholarship contribution

  • 1. 1 HOLLINGSWORTH, HOLLY Subject: Tri-C Hispanic Scholarship Fund From: Johnson, Alex Sent: Friday, August 07, 2015 1:40 PM Subject: President's Update - July 2015 July 2015 Colleagues, The summer thus far has been full of activity. July in particular was very busy at the College, highlighted by JazzFest Cleveland. Nearly 29,000 patrons, an increase of 40% over 2014, enjoyed festive events and performances at Playhouse Square’s Hanna, Ohio and Palace Theaters and the U.S. Bank Plaza. I met with faculty members Ashlee Brand and Amanda Hanley for an update on the mathematics and English initiatives designed to transform how we place and teach individuals in these subjects. Expected outcomes include greater success in courses, expedited completion through certificate programs and pathways that align with programs of study. At the invitation of Vice President Joe Biden, I joined a delegation of individuals including Jack Schron, Marsha Mockabee, Grace Kilbane, Helen Williams, and Quentin McCorvey at the White House to debrief on America’s Promise, President Obama’s plan to provide free community college education. In continuing my work with the selection panel for the Cleveland Community Police Commission, I joined fellow co-chair Colleen Cotter from the Legal Aid Society for several media interviews to discuss the application process. The panel will recommend to Mayor Frank Jackson ten individuals to serve on the commission. Below are highlights of various activities related to our institutional focus areas: STUDENT SUCCESS & COMPLETION America Welding Certification Six students received the American Welding Certification (AWS) as a result of passing the online AWS module with a score of 90% or higher. These students participated in a ten-week Fast Track Welding Boot Camp. The
  • 2. 2 boot camp is a 280-hour program that prepares students for careers in the welding industry by providing fundamental skills training in STICK, MIG, and TIG welding technologies. The certification led to several workforce successes for these students, who have become employed or promoted with local companies in various positions throughout the greater Cleveland area. Machining/Digital Design Ten students from the ninth cohort of the Right Skills Now Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) Operations program completed classroom training at the Unified Technologies Center and started an 8-week internship at Swagelok Company. The Right Skills Now Program incorporates a 180-hour training program combined with a 320-hour paid internship that focuses on the knowledge and skills necessary for employment as an operator on a CNC mill or lathe. Culinary Graduate off to Job at Michelin 3-Star Restaurant Matthew Munaretto graduated this spring with an Associate of Applied Business Degree in Hospitality Management with a concentration in Culinary Arts. He entered the Intercontinental Hotel Culinary Clash Challenge, placing fifth out of the final six competitors and used the experience as fuel to propel him on to much greater things. When Matt was nearing graduation, Chef Maureen challenged him to send his resume to Alinea, a Michelin 3-star restaurant in Chicago. Matt accepted a job at Alinea as a prep cook and after a week of hard work and dedication, he was promoted to Chef de Partie Pastry where he is responsible for the last course, referred to as the “Tropical Mat”, which is plated right on the table in front of guests. Phi Theta Kappa Recognized at Ohio Region Leadership in Action Conference Three Metropolitan Campus officers, two advisors and one alumna of the Alpha Zeta Delta Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa attended the Ohio Region Leadership in Action Conference in Logan, OH. The conference, sponsored by Hocking College’s Energy Institute, took place on Friday, July 17 and Saturday, July 18. Attendees participated in fellowship activities, attended workshops related to leadership and organizational development and networked with other chapters in the region. The Chapter was recognized with a traveling trophy for the Best Competitive Edge Engagement Rate for the Ohio Region. The Chapter’s participation rate in Competitive Edge, Phi Theta Kappa’s online leadership development program, was double that of the second-ranked chapter. Degree in Three Degree in Three (D3), the Tri-C branded CUNY-ASAP replication project, will launch this fall with a goal of 500 students. Of that group, to be divided between the Eastern and Western campuses, half of the students will be in the program (study) group while the rest will represent the control. Students in the D3 study group receive specialized services delivered on a cohort basis and built around a model of intrusive advising. The intent is to demonstrate the success of this approach in terms of degree completion within three years. Click here to obtain additional information about D3. New Partnerships – College Credit Plus As the State of Ohio transitions the Post-Secondary Enrollment Options Program (PSEOP) to College Credit Plus, the College has had ongoing conversations with local school districts to create partnerships. As a result of these conversations, 35 Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) have been signed by school districts in Cuyahoga and surrounding counties. Conversations will continue to hopefully increase the number of MOUs before the start of fall semester. Tri-C continues to be the largest institution in Ohio providing an early start to earning college credit, serving over 2,000 high school students each academic year. The majority of these students attend a class at one of our four campuses or the Brunswick University Center. Under College Credit Plus, the College will offer a total of 30 Tri-C courses at the following high schools this fall: Lawrence School,
  • 3. 3 Cleveland Heights, Rocky River, Fairview Park, Holy Name, Berea-Midpark, and Parma Senior High School. The courses will be taught by qualified adjunct faculty members. 2015 Recording Arts Graduate Featured in Scene Magazine (June 24-30) Joshua Jesty, a Tri-C Recording Arts student and singer/songwriter, just released his fourth EP recording, It's Your Fault Everything's Alright. Joshua studied music at the Berklee College of Music with an emphasis on guitar and songwriting before returning to Tri-C to study the recording arts. Cleveland Scene's Matt Wardlaw writes: "Though the configuration of players surrounding Joshua has changed, one thing that has remained consistent is his output of quality songs that, lyrically, often mix humor with unfiltered honesty.” Click here to listen. COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT Parma Run/Walk to Support Tri-C’s Student Scholarship Fund The Western Campus hosted and sponsored the Fifth Annual Parma Run/Walk for Pierogies. Parma City Council President Sean Brennan organizes the 5K, which attracted more than 600 participants this year. The run includes entertainment; visits from local sports team mascots; door prizes; drinks and snacks; gold, silver and bronze pierogi medals for the top runners; and, of course, pierogis – courtesy of Parma’s own Perla’s Homemade Delights and the Little Polish Diner. Several Tri-C employees participated in the run and four of them medaled. A portion of this year’s proceeds will be donated to support Tri-C’s Student Scholarship Fund. Brunswick University Center School Supply Drive Brunswick University Center is collecting supplies for United Way of Medina County’s “Stuff the Bus” school supply drive. One in five children in Medina County do not have the supplies they need for the first day of school. This United Way campaign helps families in need by alleviating the financial strain of purchasing these items at the beginning of the school year. Tri-C JazzFest Attendance Hits a High Note Overall attendance increased 40% (28,000) over last year with audiences for ticketed indoor concerts topping 7,500 ($187,000 gross ticket revenue). However, a steep increase in attendance at the outdoor concerts at (17,500) accounted for the largest increase in attendance, as well as a modest gain in the number of people attending community outreach events during the year (3,000). Media coverage was moderate compared to 2015, though with a significant boost coming from JazzFest’s collaboration with WCPN Ideastream, which again featured festival artists in a special taping of “The Sound of Applause”, which reached an estimated 80,000 homes. Centers for Learning Excellence Give Back Staff from the four Centers for Learning Excellence (CLE) gathered at the Greater Cleveland Food Bank in Cleveland’s Collinwood neighborhood for a daylong retreat, the purpose of which was to review the transition to the new operations model implemented last fall, to plan additional refinements and share best practices, and to give back to the community by volunteering for a few hours. The CLEs at Tri-C are campus-based hubs that support full-time and adjunct faculty. The CLEs are conveniently located on each campus to provide streamlined access to instructional support for faculty. Career Speed Dating Event The inaugural Career Speed Dating event was held on the evening of Wednesday, June 25 at Corporate College East. Experts from various career and technical fields engaged with students and community members who came to learn more about particular fields. Students enjoyed being able to rotate tables and discuss
  • 4. 4 additional career opportunities outside of their chosen field, providing them with a wealth of knowledge about all of the industries present. This event was hosted by the Carl Perkins Program. Tri-C JazzFest Summer Camp in Full Swing This year’s Jazz Camp reached its capacity of 30 students, ranging in age from 10 through 18. Taught by jazz musicians who frequent the Cleveland and Akron jazz scenes, the campers performed in master classes with top-notch jazz musicians including Dominick Farinacci, John Clayton, Gerald Clayton, Benny Green and Jeff Hamilton. On Thursday, July 2, the students performed to a full house of parents and diners at Mitchell’s Ice Cream on West 25th Street. in Ohio City. They also performed on the Cleveland Scene stage at the U.S. Bank Plaza as part of JazzFest. AFFORDABILITY MUREP Aerospace Academy The Tri-C Foundation hosted a celebration at the District office on Monday, July 20 to recognize PPG Industries for their generous support and contributions to the Science, Engineering, Mathematics and Aerospace Academy (SEMAA) program, now known as the MUREP Aerospace Academy (MAA), over the past decade. Four company representatives, including two chemists, a plant production manager and a community outreach coordinator, joined us for a ceremonial check presentation and to learn more about Tri-C and youth and early college programs. All four team members are engaged in community leadership roles within PPG Industries, such as Young Professionals and the Ohio Women’s Leadership Council. Community support is a priority for PPG Industries. Gloria Moosmann presented a high-level overview of the College and Foundation and Dr. JaNice Marshall presented an informational summary on the youth and early college programs. This program is funded solely by external resources, so support and involvement by our partners is critical to the success of engaging young people in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Click here for additional information. Raymond V. Byrne Scholarship Support Numerous Tri-C students will receive scholarship support thanks to an exceptionally generous will bequest from Mr. Raymond V. Byrne. Mr. Byrne was a World War II veteran, a devout Catholic and an avid Cleveland Indians fan who continued his love of serving others by driving a school bus for the South Euclid/Lyndhurst School District following his retirement from the engineering field. According to Mr. Byrne's trustee (and onetime Tri-C student) Jane Holland, Raymond was a very generous man who gave his time to help others in need. In accordance with Mr. Byrne's wishes, his bequest will benefit scholarships for veteran students as well as students who attend Tri C as part of the Women in Transition program. The Tri-C Foundation appreciates Mr. Byrne’s generosity in helping our students achieve their dreams of higher education. His legacy will continue to live on through the Tri-C students who benefit from this incredible gift. Ohio Reach Provides Funds for New Mentoring Program The Tri-C Foundation is grateful for a recent grant award of $20,000 from Ohio Reach to enhance the Tri-C Foster Scholars Initiative and establish the Tri-C Foster Scholars Mentoring Program. The Mentoring Program, launching in fall 2015, will provide resources and services to assist students who have aged out of the foster care system with wraparound support services to help them succeed in earning their degrees. Project Director Dr. JaNice Marshall also serves as associate vice president for Access and Community Engagement. John P. Murphy Foundation Funds Television and Video Project The Tri-C Foundation appreciates the John P. Murphy Foundation’s commitment of support to provide an employer-responsive experiential learning initiative for media arts students. Funds have been awarded to support the Armchair Quarterbacks partnership initiative with the College’s Television and Video Services program and Classic Teleproductions. Students will participate in a wide array of creative and production
  • 5. 5 activities culminating in a weekly professional broadcast, ensuring that students are exposed to and understand the entire production process for live broadcasts. The Tri-C Foundation is grateful to the John P. Murphy Foundation for its continued partnership and generous support since 2001 for innovative programs and essential learning equipment for students. Renewal of Program Participation for Financial Aid We are pleased to share that the Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships has successfully completed and passed the recertification process to continue to award Title IV financial aid. This review, known as the Program Participation Agreement, is a broad assessment of the College’s policies, procedures and certificate programs. The U.S. Department of Education has notified the College that the Program Participation Agreement has been extended through 2018, ensuring the College can continue to award nearly $100 million in financial aid funds to students each year. AT&T Continues Long-term Support of Hispanic Scholarships The Tri-C Foundation is grateful for the continued support of AT&T for Hispanic student scholarships. AT&T has supported the College for over 23 years. Their recent gift will help more Hispanic students connect to higher education and succeed on pathways to completion of their degrees and credentials. The $50,000 grant from AT&T will provide financial assistance for tuition, textbooks and other educational fees and expenses. We thank Tri-C Foundation Director Mylayna Albright, Vice President of External Affairs at AT&T, for her continued advocacy and passion for helping more community members achieve their educational and workforce goals. United Black Fund Supports Gateway to College The Tri-C Foundation has secured funding from United Black Fund, Inc. to support the purchase of educational materials and supplies to directly benefit students enrolled in Tri-C’s Gateway to College program. The program reaches out to students who previously dropped out of high school to give them a second chance at obtaining a high school diploma and accessing a college education. Participants are dually enrolled in high school (at Cleveland Metropolitan School District’s Promise Academy) and Tri-C. With support from United Black Fund, Tri-C is helping to remove financial barriers that prevent many of the participants from obtaining the tools and supplies necessary for successful completion of the program. The Tri-C Foundation is grateful to United Black Fund, Inc. for its continued support of the College’s programs and our students. STRATEGIC MARKETING AND COMMUNICATIONS New Course Description Pages Integrated Communications has worked with Information Technology Services (ITS) to automate course descriptions on Tri-C’s public website. ITS built a tool to pull course descriptions from Banner so that the site is automatically updated when changes occur. Previously, course descriptions would have to be manually updated or were linked to PDFs that would quickly become outdated. Buttons will be placed on all of the program pages which will link to the new course descriptions. ITS will also create a landing page including links to all of the course descriptions, which will replace the PDF version of the course catalog on our website. Republican National Convention Host Committee Breakfast The Republican National Convention host committee breakfast was held on Tuesday, July 15 at the Hospitality Management Center (HMC). The purpose of the event was to showcase Pura Vida and the HMC facilities, which the host committee plans to lease as their command central location. Representatives from the Republican Governors Association and the Petroleum Association were present. Host committee fundraiser Paige Hahn plans to bring another group in October. Adult Diploma Program
  • 6. 6 In collaboration with Integrated Communications, College Pathways staff coordinated social media messages, advertisements in Latino publications, and other marketing materials for the new Adult Diploma grant. A press release shared details on the Adult Diploma Program, which is funded by the Ohio Department of Education and targets adults, aged 22 and older, who have not yet earned a high school diploma or GED. Since the ads have been published, the Adult Diploma Program has received an average of 230 voice mails/telephone calls and over 200 emails daily from individuals interested in finally earning their high school diploma. Regional 3D (R3D) & Additive Manufacturing Conference Integrated Communications assisted in promoting the Regional 3D (R3D) and Additive Manufacturing Conference held at the Advanced Technology Training Center, which hosted more than 150 participants in sessions and demonstrations of additive manufacturing (3D printing). One participant was able to 3D-print a phone case, and the Cleveland Metropolitan School District sent representatives from their Fab Lab. To view coverage provided by Channel 19 News, please click the link: Channel 19. Veterans Initiative Awareness Campaign Two veterans enrolled in the College’s Police Academy were interviewed by WAVE FM 107 about the College’s Veterans Initiative on June 16. The interviews will be played throughout the month of July on FM 107 as part of a campaign conducted by the Veterans Initiative to increase awareness among potential donors.
