individual hears, he or she is only
hearing what the brain perceives, and
the brain can only perceive if the ear
can sense.
So to put it in more simple terms, the ear collects the sound and
sends it along the auditory pathway, but the brain is the organ
that actually interprets what we hear. So if an individual has a
hearing loss localized in his/her ear(s), then the ears are not
providing for the brain. Ultimately the brain will not interpret or
“make sense” of what is heard.
With that being said, when a person is diagnosed with a hearing
loss and decides to try hearing aids, it is crucial that he/she
understands that the brain needs some time to acclimate to the
sounds that the hearing aids provide. If the hearing loss is
longstanding, it may take months for the individual to receive full
benefit.
Just think… the more often a person actually wears his hearing
aids, the sooner he/she will acclimate to the new sound. And, the
sooner he acclimates, the more benefit he will receive. Whether
you are 1-year-old or 100-years-old, each person has the innate
