Mechanical energy is among the most plentiful and consistent energy sources in our day-to-day lives, which is available to us regardless of the whims of the weather or the cycles of day and night. Piezoelectric Energy Harvesters (PEH’s) are compact devices which allow the scavenging of low grade energy from ambient sources such as human and environmental vibrations, with the aim of using this energy to power autonomous electronic devices. Many decades of research and development in the field has led to commercially available devices based on piezoelectric materials which can be used to harvest milliwatts of energy from mechanical sources such as vibration, stress or strain.

These slides use concepts from my (Jeff Funk) course entitled analyzing hi-tech opportunities to show how energy harvesters are becoming more economically feasible for the Internet of Things (IoT). Small amounts of energy can be harvested from vibrations, temperature differences, and radio frequencies using various types of electronic devices such as piezoelectric, MEMS, thermo-electric power generators, and other devices. As improvements in them occur and as the energy requirements of accelerometers, pressure sensors, gas detectors, bio-sensors, and readout circuits fall from microwatts to hundreds of nano-watts, energy harvesters become cheaper and better than are batteries. Improvements in energy harvesting are occurring in the form of higher power per area or higher power per temperature difference and improvements of about five times are expected to occur in the next 5 to 10 years. The market for energy harvesters is expected to reach $2.5 Billion by 2024. In addition to their impact on buildings and the other usual applications for IoT, they will also impact on agriculture, aircraft, and medical implants.

As sensors and actuators are deployed in increasing numbers across greater distances, autonomous devices will become more ubiquitous. In 1999, Odisha, India, was struck by a devastating super cyclone, claiming thousands of lives and causing widespread destruction. The cyclone, known as Cyclone 05B or Super Cyclonic Storm, made landfall on October 29, 1999, with wind speeds exceeding 250 km/h (155 mph). The impact was catastrophic, leading to extensive flooding, infrastructure damage, and loss of life. Despite efforts to evacuate residents and prepare for the storm, the sheer force and intensity of the cyclone overwhelmed the region's infrastructure and emergency response capabilities. The aftermath of the cyclone left thousands dead and many more injured, homeless, and in need of urgent assistance. In the face of such devastation, communities rallied together, and aid agencies and governments mobilized to provide relief and support to those affected. The Odisha cyclone of 1999 stands as a somber reminder of the vulnerability of coastal regions to natural disasters and the importance of preparedness, resilience, and coordinated response efforts in mitigating their impact.

Sexual maturity in ponds is reached at an age of 5-6 months. Spawning begins when water temperature reaches 24˚c. The breeding process starts when the male establishes a territory, digs a craterlike spawning nest and guards his territory called a lek. Nests are prepared by scooping out depressions at pond bottom. Mature female visits the pond and there is immediate courtship and mating. The ripe female spawns in the nest, and immediately after fertilization by the male, collects the eggs into her mouth and moves off. The female incubates the eggs in her mouth and broods the fry after hatching until the yolk sac is absorbed. (1-2 weeks acc. to water temp.) The Feed Conversion Ratio is a calculation that tells us how much feed we need to give for the fish to gain 1 kg in weight. For example, a FCR of 1.5:1 means that the farmer has given 1.5 kg of feed to increase the weight of the fish by 1.0 kg. FCR = Amount of feed provided (kg) / biomass gained (kg) Ideal Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR) for tilapias in ponds and cages during grow-out stage The Body Condition Factor is a calculation that tells us if the fish have a normal weight, are underweight or are overweight for their size. To calculate this, we use the length and weight of the fish. Body condition factor (k) = 100 x (weight [g] / total length [cm]3) Ideal Condition Factor (K) for tilapias in ponds and cages during the grow-out stage. The crude protein is a measure of the % protein contained in the feed. As a rule of thumb, as tilapia grow, the percentage of crude protein needed for optimal growth decreases. In this module, we are focusing on the grow-out stage and the ideal amount of protein in ponds and cages. Ideal crude protein % for tilapias in ponds and cages during the grow-out stage.

FCR = Amount of feed provided (kg) / biomass gained (kg) Ideal Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR) for tilapias in ponds and cages during grow-out stage The Body Condition Factor is a calculation that tells us if the fish have a normal weight, are underweight or are overweight for their size. To calculate this, we use the length and weight of the fish. Body condition factor (k) = 100 x (weight [g] / total length [cm]3) Ideal Condition Factor (K) for tilapias in ponds and cages during the grow-out stage. The crude protein is a measure of the % protein contained in the feed. As a rule of thumb, as tilapia grow, the percentage of crude protein needed for optimal growth decreases. In this module, we are focusing on the grow-out stage and the ideal amount of protein in ponds and cages. Ideal crude protein % for tilapias in ponds and cages during the grow-out stage.

The superficial (cutaneous) fungal infections involve skin and its appendages, hair and nails. The causative fungi colonize only cornified layer of epidermis or supra-follicular portion of hair and usually do not penetrate into deeper tissues. The distribution and frequency of these infections and their etiological agents vary according to the geographic region, the socioeconomic level of population, climatic variation, presence of domestic animals and age. These infections are usually presented as scaly patches with central clearing with sharply demarcated as annular, erythematous, sometimes with vesicles, blisters and pustules. These superficial fungal infections are also responsible for morbidity, affecting quality of life, have recurrent relapses and drug resistance. This study was carried to find out the prevalence of various fungi associated with superficial fungal infection. This is a retrospective observational study carried to see clinical and laboratory profile of clinically suspected cases of superficial (cutaneous) fungal infection cases attending Dermatology Out Patient Department (OPD) and Skin scrapings, hair and nail samples were collected and processed according to standard mycological protocol. A total of 120 specimens were collected from clinically diagnosed superficial fungal infection cases. Tinea corporis was the most common clinical type in our study followed by Pityriasis versicolor, Onycomycosis and Tinea pedis. Most common dermatophyte species isolated was Trichophyton mentegrophyte and Malassezia sp. followed by Trichophyton violaceum, Candida sp., Trichophyton rubrum, Microsporum audouinii and Fusarium sp. Along with dermatophytes, nondermatophytic fungal infections are emerging as important debilitating problems affecting quality of life. Due to different type of antifugal use in different superficial mycoses, laboratory confirmation is desired, to decrease inappropriate use of drugs and drug resistance.
