Barrier Property for dog food packaging

Of course, it is very important to keep the dog food as fresh as possible, and give our dogs
good tastes, Usually, for wet dog food, it is usually canned packaging, that will ensure a
great barrier packaging against outside factors. However, when it comes to dry dog food,
it is usually packed in plastic bags or foil bags, and of course, dry dog food have to be kept
fresh inside the foil package. We are a professional producer of plastic pouches for dry dog
food, and here we are going to get a shallow understanding on the barrier performance
on the plastic pouches.
The barrier property for the plastic pouches are mainly depending on the barrier
performance for the film materials used for the pouches. And below, we get a basic
understanding on the film materials that are applied for the pouch converting.

1) Polyester film
Polyester film, usually short as PET film in flexible packaging, that mainly serve as outside
printing substrate in the pouch structure.
2) Metallized Polyester film
Metallized polyester film is achieved by depositing a thin layer of aluminum atoms onto
the surface of polyester film and finally a bright, metallic, barrier film is produced as
below.
Metallized polyester film usually works as middle layer in the foil structure, functions as

barrier layer and sunlight shielding layer.
3) Aluminum Foil
Aluminum foil is a very thin layer of aluminum metal at 7 microns used in flexible packaging,
that is achieved by calendaring the aluminum metal into foils, and that occupies the first
barrier layer among all the film materials used in flexible packaging.
4) KPET film
KPET film, is short for PVDC coated polyester film, that is to apply a thin layer of PDVC
emulsion onto the surface of polyester film, and then achieve a coated film that is better
barrier property than common polyester films
5) Nylon film
Nylon film, usually short as NY film or PA film in flexible packaging, that is great barrier
against oxygen, however not to moisture. Particularly, Nylon film is moisture-sensitive,
that cause the barrier property to decrease when the moisture increases. And that also
limits some applications for nylon film.

6) LDPE film
LPDE film, is short for low density polyethylene film, that is the most common film used
for plastic packaging, usually works as inner seal layer in multilayer laminated packaging.
And here, we are going to list the barrier property against WVTR (Water Vapor Transmission
Rate) and OTR (Oxygen Transmission Rate) for the above film materials.

For the final property for the pouch, Let’s take a three-layer foil structure for example, as
below.
The barrier property for the laminated foil is calculated as below.
Seen from the above formula, we can see that the better barrier for each layer, the better
barrier performance for the final laminated foil. And the best barrier foil is the laminated
foil included aluminum foil.
