3. What are coatings and liquid laminates?
Protective overlaminate coatings, also called liquid laminates, are an
inexpensive way to protect your prints, signs, banners, awnings and other
products. Liquid laminates are cost-effective, easy to apply, and do not
require expensive equipment. The coverage ranges from 15 - 20 square
meters, per litre.
NUcoat protective overlaminate coatings use the latest chemistry to
protect many applications on many different substrates.
Overlaminate protective coatings, or liquid laminates are used for:
•digital inkjet and general printed products
•traditional signage applications
•Protection on a wide range of other applications
Our protective overlaminate clear coating, UV500-G, is a superior high
performance, general purpose water-based coating, with a good balance
of versatile properties. We created it specifically to:
•protect inks from scratching and scuffing
•provide improved resistance to chemicals and water
•improve performance in ultraviolet exposure
4. Three major benefits of UV500-G…
1. Coatings protect ink.
In digital printing, inks are applied as a thin film that must be protected from a number of hazards:
•scratching and scuffing
•wind, rain, and wind-borne particles
•water
•cleaning chemicals
•handling
•UV exposure (fading)
UV500-G gives you just that.
Excellent for vertical truck-side self adhesive applications
Excellent adhesion to a very wide range of flexible and rigid materials used in the signage industry.
UV500-G has good adhesion to most UV-cured inks.
An excellent economical solution for general signage coating.
Easy to apply in print or signage shops that do not have liquid laminators.
Excellent levelling properties when using a pad application.
5. Three major benefits of UV500-G…
2. Clear coatings enhance the color.
Clear coats enhance the visual appearance of ink.
They heighten the color and increase the color density.
UV500-G provides excellent gloss.
3. Coatings benefit traditional materials, too.
Traditional materials like painted surfaces, fabric and vinyl signage also
benefit from liquid lamination. Coats cut down on peeling by sealing the edges of vinyl graphics and
lettering. As well as enhancing the image and sealing theprint on fabric substrates.
Liquid laminates can significantly increase the life expectancy of plastic. Vinyl is protected without losing
its flexibility. NUtec’s UV500-G also enhances the visual appearance of many other products by enhancing
the intensity of colors and making signs and banners look more unified and smooth.
6. Recommended method to apply UV500-G
IMPORTANT NOTE: AGITATE BOTTLE GENTLY BEFORE USE.
OPERATIONAL CONDITIONS:
Recommended operational conditions: 19-28°C/30-80%RH.
1. APPLICATION PAD:
•Before using the coating application pad, make sure any loose pile, dust,
dirt or other contaminants are first removed by gently wiping surface of the
bristles in palm of your hand. Check the pile is clean.
2. NUcoat LAMINATE TRAY:
•Gently pour the liquid laminate into the (clean uncontaminated) tray to a
depth not exceeding 10mm.
•Ensure application pad is dry or excess moisture removed before
continuing to the next step.
•Dip the pad evenly into the NUcoat to ensure only the yellow fibers are
soaked.
•DO NOT SOAK THE SPONGE.
•Gently lift the pad and wipe off excess coating from the fibers by lightly
swiping the pad across the edge of the tray to avoid dripping.

3. APPLYING THE COATING TO THE PRINT:
•Keeping the pad level, commence application of the coating with gentle vertical and/or horizontal
overlapping strokes ensuring the entire printed area is covered by the liquid laminate.
•Minimum to no pressure is required when applying the coating – ensure there is sufficient coating
on the fibers.
•LET THE PAINT PAD DO THE WORK – DO NOT SQUEEZE DOWN ON THE SPONGE AS THIS MAY RESULT
IN BUBBLE FORMATION IN YOUR LAMINATION. Gentle strokes will result in smooth and even
application.
•Apply a second coat if required, although not necessary, after allowing first coat to completely dry
(depends on Ambient temperature and humidity conditions – make a test draw on a separate piece
of media to verify coating is dry)
•Substrate must remain flat during drying operation and not suspended in vertical position.
Tip: Perform a test application on sample print first to perfect the technique.
4. CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE:
•NUcoat liquid laminate is water compatible; therefore the pad is easily cleaned by gently rinsing in
clean cold running water until thoroughly clean. This will ensure a long life of the application pad
and high quality results.
•Leave pad submerged in clean water overnight or until next use.
•DO NOT wash pad in hot water.
•DO NOT clean using turpentine, thinners or soapy liquids – this will destroy the pad.
•Wash tray with clean running cold water and peel off any dry laminate.
•Rinse and allow to dry. Ensure proper cleaning to extend life of tray.
9. Disclaimer
As the digital industry grows and more inks and media types are introduced, it is now
impossible to predict the compatibility of every combination of media, ink, and coating. We
strongly recommend that you test before use. A test will immediately show you
incompatibilities, including adhesion and ink bleeds.
Generally, let the tested material dry for at least 24 hours. Evaluate the adhesion, flexibility,
and visual appearance. Be realistic in your expectations and simulate the conditions the
material will be exposed to.
