HOUSING DECISIONS, POLICIES &
YOJANAS MADE BY BJP.
2
HOUSING (URBAN & RURAL)
• Housing is one of the basic necessities of life and the right to housing and adequate
shelter is guaranteed in the Directive Principles of State Policy enshrined in the
Constitution of India.
• The rapid pace of urbanisation in India has resulted in severe shortage of housing and
basic services like potable water, well laid out drainage system, sewerage network,
sanitation facilities, electricity, roads and appropriate disposal of solid waste.
3
HISTORICAL CONTEXT OF POLICY INTERVENTIONS
TOWARDS HOUSING IN INDIA:
• The policies of urban development and housing in India have had a long journey since
independence. In early 1950s, the pressure of urban population and lack of housing
along with basic services was an issue of great concern to the Government as well as
to the civil society.
• It has generally been the responsibility of States to intervene towards meeting the
housing requirements of the vulnerable sections of society and to create an enabling
environment for provision of shelter to all on a sustainable basis.
