Sudanese
Costumes
Sudanese clothing varies among the different parts
and peoples of Sudan. The traditional costume widely
worn in Sudan for men is the jalabiya, which is a
loose-fitting, long-sleeved, collarless ankle-length.
The jalabiya is accompanied by a large scarf worn by
men, and the garment may be
white, colored, striped, and made of fabric varying in
thickness, depending on the season of the year and
personal preferences.
And the traditional costume in Sudan for women is
tobe or tawb. Like the jalabiya, the tobe is a
long, although it may have a collar, be less loose-
fitting, or have shorter sleeves or length than the
jalabiya. It is also made of many fabrics but more
colorful than the jalabiya. These are the traditional
clothing that mostly worn in the middle of Sudan.
Northern
Costumes
Because of the hot climate, light, loose-fitting
clothing is typically worn. However, women and
men follow certain guidelines that most citizens
follow closely.
     According to an article on
everyculture.com, "Muslim women in the north
follow the tradition of covering their heads and
entire bodies to the ankles. They wrap themselves
in a 'towb,' a length of semi-transparent fabric that
goes over other clothing."
Men also cover most of their bodies with a
light, loose-fitting, white robe. They too cover their
heads with either a small cap or a turban.
Head covering serves to protect the people from
the sun and heat as well as honor their religious
beliefs. For instance, the women's head scarf, the
"hijab," "refers to the veil which separates man or
the world from God."
Western and
  Eastern
 Costumes
In eastern sudan men wear the jalabiya and
araqi trousers but they put on a small black
jacket called ‘sideri’, also the sourd comes as a
part of the costume, women wear the same
towb but they wear it in different ways.
Men in western Sudan wear jalabiya but in
some customs they wear skirts made of straws
and put horns on their heads, on their
traditional occasions they dance wearing this
outfit. Women also wear towb.

Southern
 Sudan
In southern Sudan men and women wear a
piece of cloth called ‘lawo’, it’s shorter than the
tobe, it ends below the knees so it allows them
to move freely, the difference comes in the
method of wearing it, men wear the lawo and
tie the end of the two edges on their left
hand, in this way they give freedom to their
right hand because they usually use it in
hunting, wars and other purposes. Women also
wear lawo but they tie it on their right
hand, and they cover their head with a wide
strip from the same fabric of the lawo, women’s
lawo is more colorful than the men’s.
Wedding
Costumes
Two days before the wedding party the bride
invites her female friends for ‘Al-henna’ and in
this day the bride wears a simple dress or a
gown (towb) and the accessories should be as
simple as the dress, and her hands should be
decorated with henna.
There are two wedding costumes for the bride
and the groom; The bride wears a gown (towb)’
she can pick any colour’, and the groom wears
full white garment (jalabbiya) and a turban, or
The bride wears a white wedding dress and full
make up, and the groom wears an elegant suit.
There are some types of folkloric rituals that
take place in Northern Sudanese weddings like
Al-Subhiya day (bridal dance); it’s the day after
the wedding day where the bride performs
some dances in front of an entirely female
audience, back in the day the bride danced
half-naked in front of everyone men and
women, she just wore a skirt called
‘Alrahat’, but nowadays Sudan's Islamic
fundamentalist government has strict rules on
how women should comport themselves in
public.
The bride performs three clauses each one
includes at least 30 dances, and every clause
has its own costume which they are a short
simple dress decorated with a lot of
accessories, a gown (towb) and a high heel of
the same colour of the dress. The last dress
must be a red one with a colourful piece of
cloth called ‘Al-Firka’ or ‘Al-Garmasees, and
also ‘Al-Jadlah’; it’s a small hat covered with a
golden coins hanging along the bride’s back.
‘The last dress must be red because there’s a
ritual that should be done after the third clause
called ‘Al-Jirtig’’.
