Today’s SmartPhones are smart… With
more computing power than Apollo 11 in the pockets of many students, we could take advantage of these devices in science class! 2Apollo 11 Moon Landing image taken from http://history.nasa.gov/ap11ann/kippsphotos/apollo.html
In our school, most HS
students useMac and many have iPhones or iPads. Here are some of my favourite free or reallycheap apps to install to turn your phoneinto a super science device. 3 Images taken from the iTunes app store for each app or screenshots from my own iPhone
Lab Timerhttp://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/labtimer/id292202454?mt=8 Why do I
like it? Very handy lab timer, which can run four timers with alarms at the same iPhone time. Great if you have your experiments staggered and need to remember when to record the results for each one. iTouch I think the iPad version can show more timers at the same time. iPad 7 Images taken from the iTunes app store for each app or screenshots from my own iPhone
Simple Radar* Gunhttp://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/simple-radar-gun/id442734303?mt=8 *no, not
really. Why do I like it? It’s not really a radar speed gun. Set the known distance and hold the iPhone screen to start the timer. Let go to stop. v = d/t is calculated right away, giving the velocity. Cool. Units can be changed from km/h to iTouch mph, though students will need to carry out their own calculations to get to m/s. iPad 12 Images taken from the iTunes app store for each app or screenshots from my own iPhone
Socrative Student Clickerhttp://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/student-clicker-socrative/id477618130?mt=8 Why do
I like it? One-click to join the room and take part in class formative assessment tasks, such as quizzes, surveys and space races. Saves you from opening iPhone the site with your browser. iTouch iPad Maybe eventually subscripts will work! You can also get the teacher clicker here: http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/teacher-clicker-socrative/id477620120?mt=8 18 Images taken from the iTunes app store for each app or screenshots from my own iPhone
And some neat apps for
getting organised:Evernotehttp://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/evernote/id281796108?mt=8 Get notes, audio, photos and files in order.Splice Video Editor (free)http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/splice-video-editor-free/id409838725?mt=8 A quick and simple video editor, like Windows Movie Maker.PDF Reader Litehttp://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/pdf-reader-lite/id368377690?mt=8 Save and read pdf files on your iPhone easily, use it like a flash disk. 19 Images taken from the iTunes app store for each app or screenshots from my own iPhone
I really want…SPARKvue for PASCO
Dataloggershttp://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/sparkvue/id361907181?mt=8Is a free app for datalogging, which allows you to collect data from thephone’s internal accelerometer. You can even connect many Pasco probesvia bluetooth, as long as you are prepared to buy an expensive adapter.Apparently the cost is due to the chip required for bluetooth with Apple. 25
