Why do I care? <ul><li>Sociology of Sexuality course taught by Barbra Van </li></ul><ul><li>Took it because my sister enrolled, told me it was a lot of work but would change the way I thought, didn’t know any class at loyola like it—I was right I have never taken anything like it </li></ul><ul><li>We covered so many topics that I never thought more about until the class like the evolution of sex, to our modern day perceptions today/ differs in our culture </li></ul>
  3. 3. So…what is sexual diversity? <ul><li>Discrimination based on sexual orientation exists today, and it exists in a BIG way </li></ul><ul><li>Sexual diversity recognizes that sexual orientation does not define us as a person </li></ul>

What is… <ul><li>Gay: a man attracted to another man, a homosexual </li></ul><ul><li>Lesbian: a woman attracted to another woman </li></ul><ul><li>YOUR GENDER ID IS WHAT GENDER YOU IDENTIFY YOURSELF AS </li></ul><ul><li>Transgender: when your gender ID does not match your “assigned sex” </li></ul><ul><li>Transsexual: people identify as, or desire to live and be accepted as, a member of the sex opposite to that assigned at birth/ most undergo gender reassignment surgery </li></ul><ul><li>Transvestite: someone who crossdresses </li></ul><ul><li>Hermaphrodite: one having both male and female sexual characteristics and organs; at birth an unambiguous assignment of male or female cannot be made </li></ul>

CRIMES against LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) Community <ul><ul><li>They are actions which may occur either at the hands of individuals or groups, or as part of governmental enforcement of laws targeting people who are perceived to violate HETERONORMATIVE rules and who contravene perceived protocols of gender and sexual roles </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>A HATE CRIME is when individuals become victimized because of their race, ethnicity, religion, gender or sexual orientation (Conklin,1992)(CSVR). </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>These are committed, generally, by homophobic persons. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Religious groups as well as proponents of extremist political ideologies condemn homosexuality and relate it to being weak, ill, feminine, and morally wrong </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>As of October 2007, consensual sexual acts between adults of the same sex were punishable by death in seven countries: </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Several media articles discuss the role religion plays, or has played, in fostering cultures that give rise to homophobic violence </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Violent hate crimes against LGBT people are notable because they tend to be especially brutal, &quot;an intense rage is present in nearly all homicide cases involving gay male victims&quot;.
