  2. Prayer in Public School’s is an ongoing debate on your Constitutional FreedomsThe main thing which is heavily debated is whether or not prayer in school violates your first amendment. The first amendment deals with the civil liberties of the people, such as religion.
  3. Lets take a closer look at the first amendment. The first amendment prevents the government from trying to establish religion, such as in schoolsIt also establishes limits on the conduct of public schools, such as prayer
  4. The history of prayer in public school all depends on how people legally interpret it.For years congress has debated on whether or not prayer in public schools is legal.Religion in school is governed by the first amendment.
  5. The Supreme Court has constantly debated Religion in Schools over the past 40 yearsOne of the first cases debated was Engle v Vitale 1962, where teachers or other public school officials can lead their class in prayer, readings from the Bible, or any other religious activity
  6. The supreme court currently has upheld that public schools have to be neutral in treatment when it comes to religion in schoolNeutral means that public school officials cannot show any favoritism nor hostility against things which express religion, such as prayers
  7. The courts decisions on prayer inschools only effect public schoolsPrivate schools are able to freely express religion without fear of violating the first amendmentPublic school teachers and officials have to be careful of how they talk about religion in schools
  8. The students are dramatically affected by prayer in public schools The answer is yes. This is made evident in the Santa Fe School District v Doe (2000)The court concluded that student initiated prayer is permissible but not required by students
  9. Prayer is not only used during school hours, but it is also used outside of the classroom during extra curricular activities; sports being the biggest oneBoth coaches and athletes have to consider if their actions violate the constitution or not in regards to prayerThe US supreme court has not yet addressed the constitutionality of a coach leading prayer before or after a gameA case was brought fourth to them stating it is illegal for coaches to engage in prayer before and after games, but the Supreme Court refused to hear it, leaving it at a close
  10. There are always cases which are being brought forth the Supreme Court about prayer in public schoolsMany of these cases are refused to be heard by the Supreme CourtAn example of this is where Borden lead prayer for his football team and was told to stopHe then sued and tried to appeal it to the Supreme Court, they refused to hear leaving it as a closed case
