7. Creating Virtual Interior Space Using a One Point Perspective Grid RED = Orthogonal Lines GREEN = Transversal Lines White and red receding lines are Orthogonals Vanishing Point
Title: Perspective Drawing: building blocks Agenda- 1. Define one-point perspective drawing Question and Answer – Why learn this skill? PowerPoint Presentation – visual representations of perspective drawing concepts Demonstration and Practice Objective: Draw a 3D cube model on a one-point perspective grid. Professional applications for Interior Designers: Develop personal interior design ideas into coherent, convincing proposals Communicate visual concepts to persuade others of the design merits Work through possible alternatives on paper, to avoid costly alterations during construction Enable building contractors and architects to draft blue prints and construct finished designs Record of all design modifications for billing documentation and reference of completed work
2. Intuitive Perspective – comparative object sizes, diagonal shape, superimposed models, location on picture plane ( option to add aerial perspective to all )
3. Definition: Linear Perspective Drawing is the application of lines on a 2D surface to illustrate 3D volumes in space. Step One = Establish a central, fixed Vanishing Point on the Horizon Line, that all the diagonal perspective lines will converge at. These lines create an illusion of depth by conveying psychological distance to the viewer. They move away from the edges of the paper, towards a single vanishing point, where they converge. Thus the name of this illustration tool - One-point Perspective.
Horizon Line always matches the viewer’s eye-level. For our purposes, we are using a high horizon line so the vanishing point is located near the top of the paper, because this vantage point of a room allows us to see more of the virtual interior space.
Sample of Interior painting labeled with the Vanishing Point on the Horizon line. Note: From this straight-ahead vantage point, we are able to see the layout of the furniture in the room, and to find the vanishing point by extending the table edge perspective lines so they seem to disappear at one point in the distance.
Step 2: Use cubes as models for one-point perspective drawings because they are simple geometrical shapes and they can suggest pieces of furniture in a room. Note: The cube drawing on the left uses a high horizon line, while the cube on the right uses a lower horizon line. Compare the different views of virtual interior space.
Step 3. One Point Perspective Grid used as a base for drawing cubes in interior space. 2 types of perspective “Lines of Construction” defined: -Orthogonal Lines: Parallel to the ground plane and move back from the picture plane. They set the varying height and width of the rectangular planes as they recede from view. -Transversal Lines: Always parallel to the picture plane and to one another. They establish a fixed height and width between two Orthogonal lines.
