  4. 4. Why do we need to share our stories?  The present situation for teachers in many schools in     many places – what is it like? Often, we complain to our colleagues and families about our situations, but we are hesitant to speak out publicly. By telling our stories, we let others know about the “ins and outs” of our jobs. Stories bring to life facts and ideas, and they shape people’s perspectives. Stories make it personal.
  5. 5. Current Issues We Face What are some issues we are facing today in our schools and classrooms? Let’s brainstorm these out and chart them.
  6. 6. Making the Issues Personal  Now let’s make it personal.  Take a sheet of paper and fold it in half.  List the issues on the left.  On the right-hand side, brainstorm some personal stories you could share that might illuminate that particular issue.  Choose one particular story you would like to tell and put a star next to it.
  7. 7. Writing Time
  8. 8. Sharing and Feedback  In small groups at your tables, take some time to allow each person to share what they wrote.  After they have shared, group members provide some feedback.     What worked in their writing? What stood out to you? Where might they need to add a little more? What did their story do to illuminate an issue?  Come back together, and as a whole group, share what happened in our small groups.
  9. 9. Now what?       Where are some places you can share your stories? www.teachersspeakup.com Local newspapers Newsletters from different organizations District websites Tweeting to legislators or to others Other ideas?
