2. What is foreign policy?
A strategy that is developed by a nation with a
purpose of enabling them to deal with other
nations
Communication between nations
3. President
The president can send
proposals for legislation in
which congress has a
decisive voice after the
proposal is submitted to the
senate or congress for
approval
The president can take
independent action which
makes it more difficult to
change a policy in a short
amount of time
Congress normally supports
the president
4. Congress
Congress can make foreign policy through
resolutions and policy statements in which the
executive branch can support it or not
Another way is legislative restrictions/ funding
denials in which it is carried out through
congress and decides whether to adopt it or not
5. The Marshall plan
George C. Marshall spoke to the graduating class at Harvard University
about the aftermath of World War 11 and the US needed a program of
assistance to countries in Europe. He stated that the US should do
whatever they can do to assist in the return of normal economic health.
Congress then approved his plan and by 1952 the US had sent $13,000
million in economic aid and technical assistance to 16 European
countries. It became known as a joint European-American venture.
The Marshall plan was giving aid to another country, therefore seeking an
alliance with another nation and helping them out which is why it was so
important to the foreign policy because the US was looking out for
another nation besides themselves.
6. NATO
NATO's primary purpose is to safeguard the
freedom and security of its members through
political and military means. It promotes
democratic values and encourages consultation.
It is also committed to the peaceful resolution of
disputes.
Currently NATO expresses concern over Turkey's
decision to co-produce a missile defense system
with a Chinese firm and the US says the Chinese
missile defense system would not work with
NATO systems.
7. The United Nations
The United Nations is committed to maintain international peace and
security, developing friendly relationships among nations and promoting
social progress. It works with foreign policy because it secures peace and
nonviolence with other nations and makes the people feel safe. It also
encourages respect for each others rights and freedoms which makes
foreign policy friendly.
A current issue is in Kosovo elections are taking place and the United
Nations mission there said that the police is taking necessary measures to
ensure safety after the attacks of two candidates.
8. World Hunger Organization
The purpose is to educate the public and target groups about the causes of
hunger and malnutrition. They also promote individual and collective
commitments to sustainable hunger solutions. This helps with the foreign
policy because it is a group that wants to cure worldwide hunger,
therefore relationships are created with different nations.
A current issue the climate change puts the worlds food supply in danger
for the upcoming decades. It will potentially undermine crop production
and prices increasing at a time when demand for food will soar.
9. US citizens
In the Middle East, US has made itself a prominent role by using its
diplomatic, economic and military power in support of its national
interests.
The US supported Israel and in response the American economy and jobs
are tied to a continually upgrading Israeli army because of all the
American military equipment that was used in support for Israel.
241 marines were killed in the Middle East
The gulf war won the US the gratitude of the oil-rich states of the Persian
Gulf for eliminating the Iraqi military threat.
