Digital Graphic Narrative Planning
Use this booklet to help structure your planning and collate your planning documents.
Considerations:
There are lots of things to consider in this project. Fill out each section in detail to show you have thought about each one. You
should imagine that this is a live project, so considerations like cost, quantity and codes of practice must be thought about in that
context rather than just as a college project.
Costs:
There are a few costs that come with the project. There will be printing costs, which may cost quite a lot of
money, considering the book is in colour. I will need to buy a range of stationary to brainstorm my ideas, like
this could be sharpies as they are colourful and show my ideas. I need to buy a pack of A3 paper to
brainstorm my ideas. I can this from a range of places, Wilkinson’s do 30 sheets for £1, however I may need
more than 30. Photoshop to buy is £17.15 per month so I will need to buy is for two months because that is
how long the project lasts.
Available resources:
I have a computer which is available to me. I need computers to plan and create my book.
I will need to use Photoshop because this is the software I will be using to make my book, which is available
on the internet to download from the adobe website. I need a pen and paper to brainstorm my ideas, I have
pencils that I can use but I may need to buy a range of stationary to show my ideas.
Quantity:
At first I would like to produce about on 5,000 copies of book because I don’t know much popular it will be,
and I wouldn’t want to lose too much money if they didn’t sell-however that would be a risk that I would have
to take. Although with that being said the little mermaid is a popular fairy tale and people may find my
amendments interesting, and therefore buy the book. If the book proved to be popular, I would then think
about producing in much larger amounts - like about 50,000-100,000.
Audience and Target Market:
My target market will be a parents because they will be buying the book for their child/children. I want my book
to look appealing to them because if the parents don’t like my book, it doesn’t stand a chance of audience,
which are their children, reading it. That is exactly the reason why it is important to appeal to parents; they
control what their child reads. I hope the bright colours will stand out to the parents and make them that it
would something their child would be interested in. However my target audience will children aged 5-10.I feel
my book may appeal more to girls rather than boys because the main characters in the story are young
females. This means that they can relate to them more and empathise them more than a male can.
Quality Factors:
To keep my work to a high standard I will need to make sure I don’t have any distractions. I will make sure I
am following my schedule so that my work will be finished for the company on time.
The factors may influence the quality of my work could be a number of things. Firstly, distractions like phones
and peoples around me, which can cut into production time and hinder my concentration. To prevent these
distractions, I will make sure I only use my phone to take important calls and work in a quiet environment.
Secondly, personal health may be a factor because if I am ill I may not be able to do the work or not to be
focused to complete the book to the highest standard, I cannot prevent myself from being ill but I can organise
my time well so I time to catch up and improve the graphics. Thirdly daily schedule could be a factor like lack
of sleep, this will decrease my concentration when I’m working the following morning, meaning the graphics
may end up looking the best they can. I will make sure I have at least 8 hours so I’m ready to work the next
morning and I have my full concentration on creating the book. Finally, and more importantly I think
organisation will be a massive factor in the quality of my work; If I’m not organised, I will be in a rush and be
confused on what exactly to do. Rushing may make me forget elements of the pages and not be as precise
when creating the graphics there decreasing the quality of the book. I will make sure I organise what I’m doing
each day so I can work towards finishing the book before the dead line and not be rushing to complete it in
time.
Codes of Practice:
In the publisher’s association code of practice, it raises lot of things to be aware of and consider. The
practices explain that the ‘publisher must not cancel the contract without good or proper reason’. The valid
reasons for cancelling it include time, standard and quality and deflation and illegality. It says that if the author
has not finished work in ‘good faith and with proper care’ the published can refuse to pay them for the project
or request a refund if the money has already been payed. To make sure that I receive my payment for the
project I will make sure that I complete work to the highest standard and follow the brief given by the
publisher. In regards to time, the practice states that if the ‘author fails to deliver a completed manuscript
according to the brief’ the publisher may be refunded the ‘advances already paid on account’. I will make sure
that I finish my project on time so that I receive my money and do not hold back the publisher. If work is
believed to be ‘defamatory or otherwise illegal’ the publisher has ‘no obligation to publish’ the work. I will make
sure that I do not include any illegal elements in my work which could cause the contact to be cancelled.
The publisher must keep the author ‘informed of progress’ and ‘must handle manuscripts promptly’. This parts
explains that ‘a progress report should be sent by the publisher within 6 weeks of receipt’. I will make sure that
I listen to what the progress report say’s as it is likely to influence production.
Regulation:
Books have to comply with toy safety directive 2009/48/EC because in some cases a book is like a toy, due to
they’re being things inside or hanging from it. This doesn’t really apply to this project because my book will be
just paper and will not contain any small parts which may be harmful to children.
It is also covered by obscene publications 1959.
Furthermore it is covered by the quality act to avoid discrimination taking place in the book. However in my
book I will not be discriminating against any social group, race or religion.
Copyright:
During this project I will not use other peoples’ work in my project because it will be classed copyright. If you
use someone’s work in your work you would have the share the profits because it completely your own work.
Copyright means that the creators of the work have the right to decide how their work is used. Copyrights on
old stories may have run out, if it has you can use it because it is no longer covered by the laws. All the work
used in my project will be my own so I follow these laws.
Ethical Issues:
There are some ethical issues to be considered .One issue is decency because I got to make sure that my
book is of an acceptable standard. When creating a female teenage character I will have to make sure that
they could don’t look too provocative.
Also I will consider representations because I wouldn’t want portray anyone in the wrong way. For example, I
don’t want to portray a certain gender or race as bad. In my story I have two good female characters and one
bad female characters so it balances it out a bit
Resources:
A successful project relies on good planning. Considering all the resources you will need for a project and then assessing which
you already have and which you need will help ensure you are ready to start your project.
If there is a resource you don’t currently have, then consider how you are going to get it before you go in to production.
Resource: Do you have What do you need to do to get it?
it?
Computer Yes
Photoshop No
I will download Photoshop from the adobe website-two months
for £34.30.

from bakerross.co.uk.
Pencil Yes
Paper NO
I will need to buy a pack of A3 paper from Wilkinsons. 30
sheets are £1.
Production Schedule:
Delivering your project on time is vital. In order to do this, you need a solid plan of action. This will help you divide up your work in
to manageable chunks to be tackled one at a time. It will also allow you to plan which tasks need to be done in which order. It will
also allow you to track your progress each day. If you are falling behind, you will need to modify the way you work. If you work
faster than expected, you can clearly see what the next steps you need to take are.

Health and safety:
Your health and safety and that of those around you is very important. Just like in industry, an accident could prevent you from
working. Whilst we don’t work in a highly dangerous environment, there are still risks. Some are short term, such as trips and
spillages whilst others, such as long term damage to eyesight or back problems, may affect you much later in life.
Consider the risks based on the activities you will be undertaking during the project. Explain how you could prevent them from
happening.
Ensure you reference appropriate pieces of legislation, design to protect people at work.
Health and Safety Issue How can you prevent it?
Reduced eye sight, sore eyes from staring at the
computer screen for long amounts of time.

I will need to buy a range of stationary to brainstorm my ideas, like this could be sharpies as they are colourful and show my ideas. I need to buy a pack of A3 paper to brainstorm my ideas. I can this from a range of places, Wilkinson’s do 30 sheets for £1, however I may need more than 30. Photoshop to buy is £17.15 per month so I will need to buy is for two months because that is how long the project lasts. Available resources: I have a computer which is available to me. I need computers to plan and create my book. I will need to use Photoshop because this is the software I will be using to make my book, which is available on the internet to download from the adobe website. I need a pen and paper to brainstorm my ideas, I have pencils that I can use but I may need to buy a range of stationary to show my ideas.
  • 2. Quantity: At first I would like to produce about on 5,000 copies of book because I don’t know much popular it will be, and I wouldn’t want to lose too much money if they didn’t sell-however that would be a risk that I would have to take. Although with that being said the little mermaid is a popular fairy tale and people may find my amendments interesting, and therefore buy the book. If the book proved to be popular, I would then think about producing in much larger amounts - like about 50,000-100,000. Audience and Target Market: My target market will be a parents because they will be buying the book for their child/children. I want my book to look appealing to them because if the parents don’t like my book, it doesn’t stand a chance of audience, which are their children, reading it. That is exactly the reason why it is important to appeal to parents; they control what their child reads. I hope the bright colours will stand out to the parents and make them that it would something their child would be interested in. However my target audience will children aged 5-10.I feel my book may appeal more to girls rather than boys because the main characters in the story are young females. This means that they can relate to them more and empathise them more than a male can. Quality Factors: To keep my work to a high standard I will need to make sure I don’t have any distractions. I will make sure I am following my schedule so that my work will be finished for the company on time. The factors may influence the quality of my work could be a number of things. Firstly, distractions like phones and peoples around me, which can cut into production time and hinder my concentration. To prevent these distractions, I will make sure I only use my phone to take important calls and work in a quiet environment. Secondly, personal health may be a factor because if I am ill I may not be able to do the work or not to be focused to complete the book to the highest standard, I cannot prevent myself from being ill but I can organise my time well so I time to catch up and improve the graphics. Thirdly daily schedule could be a factor like lack of sleep, this will decrease my concentration when I’m working the following morning, meaning the graphics may end up looking the best they can. I will make sure I have at least 8 hours so I’m ready to work the next morning and I have my full concentration on creating the book. Finally, and more importantly I think organisation will be a massive factor in the quality of my work; If I’m not organised, I will be in a rush and be confused on what exactly to do. Rushing may make me forget elements of the pages and not be as precise when creating the graphics there decreasing the quality of the book. I will make sure I organise what I’m doing
  • 3. each day so I can work towards finishing the book before the dead line and not be rushing to complete it in time. Codes of Practice: In the publisher’s association code of practice, it raises lot of things to be aware of and consider. The practices explain that the ‘publisher must not cancel the contract without good or proper reason’. The valid reasons for cancelling it include time, standard and quality and deflation and illegality. It says that if the author has not finished work in ‘good faith and with proper care’ the published can refuse to pay them for the project or request a refund if the money has already been payed. To make sure that I receive my payment for the project I will make sure that I complete work to the highest standard and follow the brief given by the publisher. In regards to time, the practice states that if the ‘author fails to deliver a completed manuscript according to the brief’ the publisher may be refunded the ‘advances already paid on account’. I will make sure that I finish my project on time so that I receive my money and do not hold back the publisher. If work is believed to be ‘defamatory or otherwise illegal’ the publisher has ‘no obligation to publish’ the work. I will make sure that I do not include any illegal elements in my work which could cause the contact to be cancelled. The publisher must keep the author ‘informed of progress’ and ‘must handle manuscripts promptly’. This parts explains that ‘a progress report should be sent by the publisher within 6 weeks of receipt’. I will make sure that I listen to what the progress report say’s as it is likely to influence production. Regulation: Books have to comply with toy safety directive 2009/48/EC because in some cases a book is like a toy, due to they’re being things inside or hanging from it. This doesn’t really apply to this project because my book will be just paper and will not contain any small parts which may be harmful to children. It is also covered by obscene publications 1959. Furthermore it is covered by the quality act to avoid discrimination taking place in the book. However in my book I will not be discriminating against any social group, race or religion.
  • 4. Copyright: During this project I will not use other peoples’ work in my project because it will be classed copyright. If you use someone’s work in your work you would have the share the profits because it completely your own work. Copyright means that the creators of the work have the right to decide how their work is used. Copyrights on old stories may have run out, if it has you can use it because it is no longer covered by the laws. All the work used in my project will be my own so I follow these laws. Ethical Issues: There are some ethical issues to be considered .One issue is decency because I got to make sure that my book is of an acceptable standard. When creating a female teenage character I will have to make sure that they could don’t look too provocative. Also I will consider representations because I wouldn’t want portray anyone in the wrong way. For example, I don’t want to portray a certain gender or race as bad. In my story I have two good female characters and one bad female characters so it balances it out a bit Resources: A successful project relies on good planning. Considering all the resources you will need for a project and then assessing which you already have and which you need will help ensure you are ready to start your project. If there is a resource you don’t currently have, then consider how you are going to get it before you go in to production. Resource: Do you have What do you need to do to get it?
  • 5. it? Computer Yes Photoshop No I will download Photoshop from the adobe website-two months for £34.30. Pens NO Stationary shop, I will need to buy theses from Ryman stationary or a supermarket. 12 coloured Crayola pens for £3.49 from bakerross.co.uk. Pencil Yes Paper NO I will need to buy a pack of A3 paper from Wilkinsons. 30 sheets are £1. Production Schedule: Delivering your project on time is vital. In order to do this, you need a solid plan of action. This will help you divide up your work in to manageable chunks to be tackled one at a time. It will also allow you to plan which tasks need to be done in which order. It will also allow you to track your progress each day. If you are falling behind, you will need to modify the way you work. If you work faster than expected, you can clearly see what the next steps you need to take are. Each session is a half day of college. Session 1:

  • 11. Health and safety: Your health and safety and that of those around you is very important. Just like in industry, an accident could prevent you from working. Whilst we don’t work in a highly dangerous environment, there are still risks. Some are short term, such as trips and spillages whilst others, such as long term damage to eyesight or back problems, may affect you much later in life. Consider the risks based on the activities you will be undertaking during the project. Explain how you could prevent them from happening. Ensure you reference appropriate pieces of legislation, design to protect people at work.
  • 12. Health and Safety Issue How can you prevent it? Reduced eye sight, sore eyes from staring at the computer screen for long amounts of time. -Having an adjustable and glare free screen. -breaks in between making the graphics. - stable and readable screen Upper limb pains and discomfort - Have a chair which supports your neck so your neck won’t ache. - A desk for your elbows to rest on. Fatigue and stress -have good organisation for the project -careful working, do not rush the project -short regular breaks from the screen Bodily fatigue from ill work place design - Use a chair which supports by back and neck - Have a sufficient amount of leg space - Adjustable display equipment
