LOCATION.
Use – Like the Made In Chelsea trailer on the left, this scene is also set on a sofa. We tried to recreate
this convention as Made In Chelsea is generally set in locations that the audience can relate to. We made
sure the location was clear to the audience by including the sofa and television in the background.

Develop – We have developed these conventions by including props such as the cushions, sofa and
television in the background of the scene. This emphasises where we are and develops the convention by
making it clearer to the audience that we are somewhere they can relate to.

Challenge – When it comes to challenging these conventions we have done this by being in a less classy
looking lounge or bedroom. The cast on Made In Chelsea also look like they’re on holiday where as we
just look like its our daily lives as this suited our trailer better.
PROPS.
On the trailer I have chosen to compare my trailer with props aren’t really used, however, from my
previous research I have discovered that Made In Chelsea stars use props such as clothing
accessories.

Use – On my trailer, as Sophie was walking towards the train she is holding a large bag. We
ensured that Sophie had her big bag with her while we were filming as this met the conventions of
Scripted Realities as it shows wealth and class.

Develop – We didn’t develop any conventions when it came to using props.

Challenge – We have challenged this convention by having Sophie dressed in more
casual, everyday clothes than the Made In Chelsea stars. This way the audience can relate to her
and desire to look like she does.
LOGOS AND STICKERS.
The E4 logo on the left is shown at the end of most Made In Chelsea trailers and also on other
programmes that are advertised on E4. It tells the viewer what channel the programme will be on
and what the programme is. It also states when the programme will be showing.

Use – I chose to create my own version of this logo to meet the conventions of an E4 Made In
Chelsea Trailer. This is an example of me using the conventions as I have stuck to the logo being
purple as this is a defining feature. I also used the same ‘American Typewriter’ font as this is another
example of me using the conventions. This font is also easily recognisable and creates a strong
brand identity for E4.

Develop – Instead of creasing my rectangular boxes like the E4 logo on the left I decided to keep
mine neat and straight. This is an example of me developing the conventions because the neat look
works better for my genre as it connotes class and wealth.

Challenge – When it comes to challenging the conventions at the end of the trailer the logo on the
left ‘Wipes’ onto the screen, where as mine uses ‘Lens Flare’ to come onto the screen. This is more
appropriate for my trailer as I connotes stardom and wealth.
COSTUME.
Use – As you can see in the image from Made In Chelsea, the girls are dressed quite casual however
they looked quite classy and dressed up. We used this convention by dressing in blazers and smart
shirts in our trailer.

Develop – We developed this convention by using a combination of blazers, smart trousers and
heels.

Challenge – We did challenge this convention by not wearing dresses and suits in our trailer like they
do in most episodes of Made In Chelsea because we though that this wouldn’t suit our genre and
trailer.
LIGHTING.
One of the main conventions of Made In Chelsea is to use high key lighting in almost every scene.
This makes the characters look crisp, and gets a better, more focused and clean shot.

Use – We ensured that when we were filming we had as many lights on as we could to try and get
the effect of high key lighting. We also tried to film on a day where the natural lighting was quite
bright so our scenes filmed outside would still have this lighting effect.

Develop – We have developed this convention by using a mixture of artificial and natural lighting
throughout our trailer as it was quite a bright day.

Challenge – We challenged this convention by filming outside where the chances of getting high key
lighting was slim. However because it was a bright day the shot turned out how we wanted it and the
lighting looks crisp and clean.
EYE- LINES.
Use – Both shots are medium close ups of just one particular character. The enables the audience
to see the characters facial expression clearly and to relate to them with what’s happened. It also
allows the audience to see some of what the character is wearing. Both the characters eye lines are
in the top third of the shot.

Develop – We developed this convention by using props in the background of our shot to suggest
where we are. Also we didn’t blur the backing of the shot like the MIC one as we didn’t feel the need
to in this particular shot.

Challenge – We challenged this convention by being in a less classier place than MIC as we wanted
to be able to relate to the audience and their day to day lives.
CAMERAWORK.
Made In Chelsea uses a lot of Over The Shoulder shots to see who is speaking and to also see their
reaction to what they are saying. This also makes the audience feel as though they are involved and
that they are there with the characters.

Use – We used this shot as it is a very professional looking shot and works well for our trailer. The
shot distance is the same as the one on Made In Chelsea as this meets the convention and the
green line signifies that the eye line is again in the top third of the shot.

Develop – We developed this shot as you can see more of the second characters head. We did this
as our show isn’t as well known as MIC so therefore people will be able to recognise the character
more.

Challenge – We didn’t really challenge this shot as it looks professional so we didn’t want to mess
with it. However our characters are sat down rather than stood up.
SHOT DISTANCE.
Made in Chelsea and Northern Rock uses a variety of different shot types throughout the trailers.

Use - This type of shot where you can see both the characters faces was used so that the reactions
of both people could be seen.

Develop – We didn’t develop any shot types as we stuck to the conventions closely because this is
important when it comes to making a scripted reality.

Challenge – We challenged this particular shot type as we had it as a medium close up rather than a
close up. This was you can see more of the characters to establish greater who they are.
