A team from Odyssey Marine Exploration discovered the wreckage of the ship "Buen Jesus y Nuestra Senora del Rosario" in the Gulf of Mexico in April 2013. The ship sank in 1622 after being hit by a hurricane while carrying over 17,000 pieces of silver and gold. The loss of the ship and its cargo contributed to the Bank of Madrid defaulting on loans and the decline of the Spanish Empire. Treasure hunters had searched for the shipwreck for over 400 years.
