“Freely you have received, freely
give.”
Matthew 10
“The things you have heard from me
among many witnesses, commit to
faithful men who will be able to teach
others also.”
3. Learning a process of accessing and

the previous lesson
Jesus said to them,
“Are the wedding guests able to fast
while the bridegroom is with them?
As long as the bridegroom is with them
they are not able to fast.
20 But the days will come
when the bridegroom is taken away from them
and then they will fast.”
Mark 2:19,20
7. MARK 2:23-28

10. The situation
1. It’s the Sabbath
2. Jesus and the disciples are walking through
someone’s corn field.
3. The disciples break with the Jewish traditions
by picking corn cobs and eating them.
4. The Pharisees were watching.
5. The Pharisees challenge Jesus about the
fact that his disciples are breaking the law
– i.e. two laws: reaping grain and sifting it.
11. It might have been a situation
something like this in another century
Ol' man river, cotton, Lif' dat bale!
Dat ol' man river An' dem dat Git a little drunk
He mus'know plants'em An' you land in jail.
sumpin' is soon forgotten,
But don't say But ol'man river, Ah gits weary

taters/tators, racket wid pain,

12. For jesus this was a kingdom ministry
opportunity
1. When David and his men needed food on
the Sabbath they ate from the consecrated
food in the temple.
2. The Sabbath was made for the well being
of people, not for people to suffer under the
tyranny of religious obligations.
3. I am the one who has authority regarding
the Sabbath.
14. WHAT IF IT HAPPENED IN THE LIVES
OF THE ORIGINAL HEARERS?
1. They would have realized that King David was
acting within the parameters of the original
intention of God regarding the Sabbath.
2. They would have seen the original intention as
being a loving provision by God for the good of the
people who were created lovingly by him to fulfill a
loving purpose.
3. They would have realized that Jesus was the Son
of God and therefore God.
15. How would that work for me?
1. I would honour God for knowing how I am made
and wanting me to live in physical and emotional
health by allocating a 1 in 7 kind of rotation of work
and rest.
2. I would willingly respond to Jesus as the Son of
God and the one I should look to for working out
how to live out the spiritual principles he modeled
and taught. I would also make sure I helped others
to live in the same way.
3. I would do an audit on the way I live by Christian
values to make sure they are LIFE GIVING and not
just religious.
