This is about forgiveness from the heart whom God requires from all of us, from choosing to forgive to forgiving endlessly from a heart that loves to forgive.
2. FORGIVENESS
Matthew 18:21-35
21 Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or
sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?”22 Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven
times, but seventy-seven times.23 “Therefore, the kingdom of heaven is like a king who wanted
to settle accounts with his servants.24 As he began the settlement, a man who owed him ten
thousand bags of gold was brought to him.25 Since he was not able to pay, the master ordered
that he and his wife and his children and all that he had be sold to repay the debt.26 “At this the
servant fell on his knees before him. ‘Be patient with me,’ he begged, ‘and I will pay back
everything.’27 The servant’s master took pity on him, cancelled the debt and let him go.28 “But
when that servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred silver
coin. He grabbed him and began to choke him. ‘Pay back what you owe me!’ he
demanded.29 “His fellow servant fell to his knees and begged him, ‘Be patient with me, and I
will pay it back.’30 “But he refused. Instead, he went off and had the man thrown into prison
until he could pay the debt.31 When the other servants saw what had happened, they were
outraged and went and told their master everything that had happened.32 “Then the master
called the servant in. ‘You wicked servant,’ he said, ‘I cancelled all that debt of yours because
you begged me to.33 Shouldn’t you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on
you?’34 In anger his master handed him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should pay
back all he owed.35 “This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive
your brother or sister from your heart.”(NIV)
3. Many people believe they
have forgiven simply because
they have made a choice, they
have used their will and they
have said the word of
forgiveness.
4. LOVING MERCY
Micah 6:8
8 He has shown you, O mortal, what is
good. And what does the LORD require
of you? To act justly and to love mercy
and to walk humbly with your God. (NIV)
5. The kind of heart that
God wants us is a
heart that loves to
forgive.

Editor's Notes
The word “forgiveness” has become a cliché that most Christians assume blithely that hey know what forgiveness is.
Matthew 18:21
There is reluctance in the way Peter asked the question
Peter witnesses the grace and mercy that was in Jesus towards an adulterous woman, man was lowered through the roof to be healed, Jesus words to him, “Son, your sins have forgiven you, the man had not asked for forgiveness.
Peter had witnessed Jesus forgiving sins and extending mercy in a very free and generous manner.
How do you reconcile forgiveness with the demand of the law? – I do not say to you seven times, but up to seventy seven times.
As forgiveness is generally understood today, it would follow that to forgive the same person for the same sin seven times would be extremely difficult.
When someone sin against you it always hurts. There is always pain involved.
To forgive and cancel that let them off repeatedly would hurt more and more each time.
Mostly we call the person to account the second and the third time. – friendship is lost, relationship is lost.
When Peter asked, “Lord, seven times, he thought he was already godly – but it showed that he completely misunderstood – forgiveness
The grace, mercy and forgiveness that Jesus was talking were in entirely different dimension.
Mercy is a heart to see the guilty free. It is forgiveness.
God’s desire is that we would love forgiving.
It is not something that you must do, but it is something that you love to do.
If you love something, you will do it endlessly. You will do it every time you get the opportunity. You will be looking for opportunities to do it.
When Peter asked, “Lord, how many times must I forgive my brother, when he sins against me? What he was really saying was, “this is hard work”, I don’t like doing it, I find it difficult, I don’t want to forgive.
Jesus replied, “Peter you have no idea what forgiveness really is.
It is not done by human determination – allowing God to shape us and went through a process of forgiveness.
He wants us to progress from choosing to forgive,
Moving far beyond forgiving as an act of the will, to forgiving endlessly from the heart that loves to forgive.
Matthew 18:23-34 (relate the story)
Verse 34 – “And in anger his master delivered him to the tormentors, until he should pay all his debt.
Then Jesus uttered – most serious comment in the New Testament, “So also my heavenly Father will do to everyone of you, if you do not forgive your brother/sister from your heart
In other words, you will be in torment until you forgive from your heart. Jesus told the story for one purpose. – “To teach us how to really forgive from our hearts.
