2. Target audience
From my research into my target audience for my rock genre music magazine I came to the
conclusion that my target audience would be between 16-30+ and aimed at both males and
females. The age range is appropriate as my magazine as it covers both new and older artists and
bands. Young and older readers will enjoy reading about a wide range of artists and bands. My
readers will be educated and entertained about new and existing well followed bands/artists
which they will fully enjoy and be interested in. The vast audience range will give my magazine
the freedom to produce different content in relation to the rock genre that my readers will enjoy.
Typically younger people are in a stage of listening to different music styles and genres and to
differ from the mainstream crowd, my magazine gives people the opportunity to read about the
rock genre including bands and artists that they can choose to listen to. My rock magazine is a
starting point for any person that wants to experiment and is also a magazine for the committed
rock audience. The readers of ‘Sanctuary’ will be of a mixed age and some readers can go to gigs
and concerts on their own or under parent supervision. However this makes a great place to
advertise gigs and concerts. Many people love seeing their favorite artist or band live. The age
range of my magazine includes people in fulltime education, part time education and are
working. Whatever their working or academic hours they will still have free leisure time to relax
where they can read and enjoy ‘Sanctuary’. I didn't’t want to exclude anyone from reading
‘Sanctuary’ as the rock genre is so diverse and is open for exploration and enjoyment from all
ages. I decided for my magazine to be focused on both gender groups as both genders enjoy rock.
There are equally mnay fmouse male and female rock stars throughout history and in the
present. The sales to each gender time could differ each month depending on the featured artists
or bands as this has a big impact on different genders consumer patterns. For example female
customers are more likley to buy ‘Sanctuary when it features a female artist.
3. The genre of my magazine and music is rock, this means my magazine
audience will be focused on people that fall under the rock category.
This can be for multiple reasons such as people can enjoy listening to
rock music, dress in a unique rock fashion and style their behavior in
ways that relate to rock. Many people that fall under the rock category
do all of the above and are noticeable as they differentiate from the
mainstream crowd. There are many people that enjoy rock music and
this is why I have decided to aim my magazine at rock genre music
lovers. I spotted a gap in the market where there are only a few rock
magazines such as Kerrang and Classic Rock. Kerrang generally focuses
on a young adult teenage audience and Classic Rock focuses on a
more mature audience and is significantly more expensive to other
magazines at £5.50. The price of my magazine is £4.00 which I found is
a competitive price through market research. I wanted to create a
magazine that is appropriate for a wide age range and wasn't
restricted to just one era or rock style. ‘Sactuary’ is as diverse as the
readers that read it whilst maintaining an all things rock theme
throughout.
4. Designing my magazine
When I started to design and produce my magazine I needed to ensure that I used the
research I had gathered before the production of the music magazine in order to
create a successful magazine that fitted my target audience interests and style. I made
sure my model/ music artist, ‘Angel of Death’ was styled with the appropriate fashion
and her hair and makeup emulated existing female rock stars such as Amy Lee and
Hayley Williams. My models hair was heavily curled then swept back to create volume.
Her makeup he heavily applied with bright red lipstick and heavy use of black mascara
and eye shadow. Female rock stars commonly wear heavy makeup that are usually
dark colours such as black. The overuse of dark makeup and hair styling makes ‘Angel
of Death’ stand out in a crowd and is made easily recognizable to belong to the rock
genre. Like the way I style my model my magazine is also styled in a similar way that
related to the rock genre. I used a similar main colour pallet that matched my models
cloths and makeup, this consited of black, white and red. The pages were designed
and laid out in a typical rock fashion, the cover had lost of different elements s to it
and shared qualities that existing magazines have such as Kerrang and Classic Rock .
My content page and double page spread are more simplistically designed but highly
effective.
