2. WHAT IS IT?
- A survey station is a control unit capable of evaluating the air quality
in the urban area, through the detection of data on the details of
particulates present in the air.
- These stations are used for monitoring
the concentration levels of polluting elements
determined by natural sources and by long-range
transport phenomena.
3. THE VARIOUS TYPES OF STATION
● Traffic (T)
Stations located in such a position that the pollution level
is mainly influenced by traffic emissions from
neighboring roads with medium-high traffic intensity
● Background (or background, B)
Stations located in such a position that the level of
pollution is NOT influenced mainly by specific sources,
but by the integrated contribution of all sources
upwind of the station with respect to predominant
wind directions at the site.
(Fontivegge,Perugia)
(Magione , Perugia )
4. ● Industrial (I)
Stations located in such a position
that the level of pollution is mainly
influenced by individual industrial
sources or by neighboring industrial
areas .
● Urban (U)
Fixed station inserted in a
continuously or at least
predominantly built area
(Spoleto, Perugia)
(Ponte San Giovanni, Perugia)
.
5. ● Suburban (S)
Fixed station inserted in a largely
built-up area where there are
both built-up and non-urbanized
areas.
● Rural (R)
station inserted in non-urban and
non-suburban contexts. If it is
located more than 50 km away from
the emission sources the station is
defined as REMOTE RURAL .
(Gubbio)
.
6. POLLUTANTS METHODS OF DETECTION
Sulfur dioxide (SO2) Molecular fluorescence
Nitrogen oxides (NO-NO2) and
ammonia (NH3)
Chemiluminescence
Atmospheric particulate matter Technique based on beta attenuation
Black carbon Technique based on the attenuation of light radiation
Carbon monoxide (CO) Technique based on spectrophotometry
Ozone (O3) Technique based on the absorption capacity of
ultraviolet rays of the O3 molecule
Benzene, toluene and xylenes Principle of gas chromatography

7. THE SURVEY STATIONS IN OUR CITY
There are 4 fixed survey stations connected to the data collection and
processing operations center (Dipartimento di Perugia di ARPA Umbria)
The 4 fixed survey stations:
● Parco cortonese - measure primary and secondary
pollutants + meteorological parameters.
(suburban)
● Ponte S.Giovanni - primary and secondary
pollutants , in particular NO2 . (urban)
● Fontivegge / porta pesa - Pollutants emitted by
traffic. (traffic)
With the task of controlling
the survey stations units and
having the data in real time.
8. IN OUR CITY
In our city we have different fixed survey stations

10. OUR EXPERIMENT
OBJECTIVE :
Make a pollution catcher , to examine the
issue of air quality.
MATERIALS :
● Wire
● Paper plates or pieces of card
● Vaseline
For more details: https://youtu.be/9uVdi-3AqRE
DESCRIPTION OF THE EXPERIMENT :
● Make 2 holes on the paper plate , with a
pencil or scissors .
● Pass the wire through the holes to hang it.
● Add the petroleum jelly/vaseline to catch
that pollute the air.
the pollutants
.
.
11. EXPOSURE We have exposed the pollution catcher for 10 days (from
01/04/2021) in 4 different parts of the city .
(Montelaguardia)
(Balanzano )
(Ponte Felcino)
(Ponte S.Giovanni )
13. CONSIDERATION AND CONCLUSION
You can see how we obtained 4 different results depending on the areas
of exposure:
● In urban areas the pollution catcher has taken on a darker color than in
the beginning, as it has captured more pollutants that have blackened
the vaseline .
● In the countryside the pollution catcher has collected a smaller quantity
of pollutants, taking on a lighter color, as they are less present in the air.
We will leave again exposed the pollution catcher to get more data.
