DNA contains genetic code that is copied to RNA which is then translated to produce proteins. DNA unzips and replicates by breaking base pairs to form two new DNA strands based on base pairing rules, copying the genetic code. This process allows DNA to pass genetic information to RNA and proteins which perform essential functions in the cell.
