  3. 3. an experience in a suburban district in Barcelona and into downtown business district in Buenos Aires commonalities there were multicultural families & companies families economies were historically vulnerable it depended on local services & local trade & tourism
  4. 4. families hope innovations but not changes (the change threatens their business) families could block the projec, not companies THE PEDESTRIAN CODE WOULD BE A CODE FOR FAMILIES NO FOR COMPANIES
  5. 5. local government in Buenos Aires has not legal power to invest in sidewalks –they are in charge of the private, only roadways are in charge of citycouncil local government in Barcelona has not the power to modify public space without consent by citizen participation Within both places –Buenos Aires Downtown and Barcelona suburban district, the families legitimate ‘what & where’

THE PEDESTRIAN CODE ALLOW REPEAT MANY SMALL, COMPREHENSIVE and EFFECTIVE INTERVENTIONS in order to build a common language, easy to learn, easy to use In a Barcelona suburban district the changes would be made without any way of discrimination so, in the whole district In Buenos Aires the changes couldn't be large scale ones it would be made with public & private investments
  7. 7. THE PEDESTRIAN CODE WOULD CONSTRUCT A SMART STREET families, companies, tourists using the street in the same time easy to use easy to build
  8. 8. about the concern of ‘OUT OF OBSTACLES SPACE’ ‘READY TO BE IN MOVEMENT’ it begins about the eighties, first focused on eliminating architectural barriers for people in wheelchairs, no much later it spreads into the blind people needs shortly afterwards to the hearing impaired difficulties now to EVERYBODY!
  9. 9. now, we have some new ideas & concepts 1º idea… lets think on… ‘ALL IS IN MOVEMENT SPACE’ ‘OUT OF OBSTACLES SPACE’ because PUBLIC SPACE MAKE US ‘DISABLED’ 1º concept…‘Disabled’ = ‘ countless limitations, that may occur everybody, at any time’ we need public space ready to use!
  10. 10. 2º idea…lets think on… regardless of the means of transport we use (...shoes, bicycle, motorcycle, wheelchair, crutches, trains, ship, aircraft...) ‘the car is not the enemy’
  11. 11. 3º idea... new public space benefit concept new european quality requirement has evolved from first 1993 United Nations Uniform Rules... 2º concept = OUT OF DIFFICULTIES PUBLIC SPACE = ‘is those that discharge basic functions, impossible to satisfy using other suitable way in the neighbourhood, with limit in the district’ based on the number of demanded services the users can’t access ‘out of obstacles’ to basic services, in other way
  12. 12. ‘free obstacles movements guaranteed’ construct a worthy citizen behaviour city ACCIDENTALLY SUMMARY REDUCED TO EXCEPTIONAL EPISODES the goal is: to get an autonomous citizens city more effective & efficient ‘requires public administration monitoring & reduce assistance to exceptional episodes that makes a best valued city & A VALUED CITY IS AN USABILITY ONE

KIT TOOL THE PEDESTRIAN CODE ‘a whole connected city is a safe city of everyone’ In order to get a safe city for everybody - capable of integrating - low traffic accidentally - low urban criminality - high profitable for everybody 3º concept THE PROTECTED ITINERARY -the ambit for applying the code-
  14. 14. Compatible Itineary Concept = out of obstacles itinerary for pedestrians, bycicles, drivers, urban furniture, all whole organized …the art of the ‘empty’ space …the art of the ‘a hard designed space you don’t notice…’
  15. 15. Plain and vertical connection make usability the city. Everybody is disable in public space: shopping carts make us dissable, not only wheelchairs!

All the streets are not to be protected/compatible itinerary It’s important to identify & select them in the district and develop solutions to resold ‘usability problems’ (…) sections that joins points of interest / superhabit of uses sections infrahabit of space sections / unique trafique conflicts sections unique sections by its topography or geography
  17. 17. now…lets see it > YAYA KODU > the elements catalogue Customized and repetitive solutions by neighbourhood, so it can construct the city image > city brand concept
  18. 18. from 1995, all public space projects in Barcelona must create 1 (one) protected itinerary within the ambit of every draft from 2019, all Spanish cities should begin to create it , progressively, in every existent public spaces if you visit us you will automatically move in the pedestrian code way by foot, by car, by bike, by wheelschair, because the city requires you, everyway & everywhere, to act as a pedestrian thank you!
