Analysis of lyrics kate nash

Analysis Of Lyrics-Kate Nash
Foundations
By Gemma Lovitt
Thursday night, everything's fine
Except you've got that look in your eye
When I'm tellin' a story and you find it boring you're thinking of something to say
You'll go along with it then drop it
And humiliate me in front of our friends
Then I'll use that voice that you find annoyin'
And say something like,
"Yeah, intelligent input, darlin'
Why don't you just have another beer then?"
The first verse is going to display a wide range of establishing shots to highlight to the
audience exactly where my scene is set. This will be beneficial as the audience will be less
likely to become confused or unaware on the location of the narrative.
At the beginning of the verse I will emphasise that everything in the scene is going perfectly
without any distractions or disruptions, therefore will have to include a range of close ups
to illustrate the facial expressions of the female protagonist. Furthermore the props that I
will use consist of a story book to link the lyrics with the visuals (Andrew Goodwin Theory.)
Facial expressions, body language and close ups are all vital when producing successful
shots that can relate effectively to the lyrics and therefore must be managed correctly.
Secondly the second verse will be focusing on the female singers lip singing as this
verse consists of acting as another individual. I will be using props such as a beer
glasses and pints to once again link with the lyrics. Also within this verse I am aiming to
have changed outfits and have a plain black hat to link with the genre and the timing of
the setting and locations. I will have to ensure that my female singer is full of enthusiasm
and sarcasm. Lastly I will be using a range of hand movements to emphasise the artist
taking the mick out of her lover.
Then you'll call me a bitch
And everyone we're with will be embarrassed
And I won't give a shit.
My fingertips are holding onto
The cracks in our foundation
And I know that I should let go
But I can't
Furthermore within this scene I aim to have a group of people making the scene look busy.
Therefore I am likely to film this scene within a party as I will illustrate the male being nasty
and ‘embarrassing’ to Monique (female artist.) Similarly I will have the female artist walking
away with a group of girls to carry on with her night out, not looking back or giving a slight
care. This verse I will change the camera angles and have both long shots and the female
artist holding the camera on herself, leading the camera to be unsteady linking to a night
out with a load of drinks.
The above lyrics state the exact same words sung in each and every chorus. Therefore this
has to be most effective allowing the audience to maintain the most amount of interest, as
its one of the most important parts of the song. Within the very first sentence I am going to
display a shallow focus shot of two people holding hands with the sunlight reflecting. I will
then have the hands braking apart co notating that the love is, however she can’t forget
about it. By the end of the chorus I will have a close up of the female highlighting her
depressing emotions. Similarly I am debating having a long shot of her with a suitcase
departing to an airport via public transport e.g. train to Heathrow terminals.
And every time we fight
I know it's not right
Every time that you're upset and I smile
I know I should forget But I can't
You said I must eat so many lemons
'Cause I am so bitter I said,
"I'd rather be with your friends, mate
'Cause they are much fitter"
The above lyrics state the exact same words sung in each and every chorus. Therefore this
has to be most effective allowing the audience to maintain the most amount of interest, as
its one of the most important parts of the song. Within this segment of the chorus I will
display an unconventional stereotype of the male gender as I will have a range of camera
shots and angles of a group of men having a night in sharing emotions and becoming
emotional whilst the girls are all out ‘clubbing’ having a good night. Although by the end of
the night I will catch the female thinking about the past and travelling home alone, getting
in bed alone and cuddling to a teddy that her boyfriend once gave.
Moreover as the song progresses the amount of clothing and props as I do not want the
audience to become bored and similarly I do not want them to predict the end result of the
song. Within the aforementioned lyrics stated above I will have a bowl full of lemons and
will have them placed on the floor displaying a heart broken into two whilst the artist is
laying in the middle biting a lemon and smiling bitterly. Then as the lyrics progress I will
display the female going out on dates and drinks with all the males best friends.
Yes, it was childish and you got aggressive
And I must admit that I was a bit scared
But it gives me thrills to wind you up
Your face is pasty,
'cause you've gone and got so wasted,
what a surprise,
don't want to look at your face,
'cause it's making me sick.
You've gone and got sick on my trainers,
I only got these yesterday.
Oh my gosh, I cannot be bothered with this.
This scene will display the two main protagonists/artist arguing and become verbally and
physically aggressive. Then I will have the female artist hiding aware as she becomes
scared and agitated with the whole situation. Then towards the final part of this particular
verse I will likely focus on a book that has a range of ideas from 1-10 on best ways to wind
someone up. This again would be effective as it would link the visuals to the lyrics
preventing the audience from becoming bored.
The setting and location of this scene will take place in the house of the couple where the
female artist is frequently making time checks whilst attempting to get to sleep, whereas
the male is completely oblivious and out drinking with his mates. Once he comes home she
refuses to look in his face ‘don't want to look at your face’ and pushes him away in disgust.
Finally she ends up walking out of the house and follows on to not returning in the
morning.
This scene concentrates purely on the argument highlighted before. I hope to have a shot
displaying the new trainers that the girl has purchased to illustrate her love for her new
belongings and then quickly cut to how things can be ruined straight away before a blink of
an eye.
Well I'll leave you there till the mornin',
and I purposely won't turn the heating on
and dear God, I hope I'm not stuck with this one.
And every time we fight I know it's not right,
every time that you're upset and I smile.
I know I should forget, but I can't.
Finally the scene will portray the female artist (Monique Todd) getting her own back and
conveying pity and hurt. It will visualise a range of winter clothing as the ‘heating won’t be
on,’ Therefore to go alongside this scene I will use a range of blue key lighting to display
the cold emotionless senses that are scattered around the scene. I will also have a mid
shot of the artist looking directly towards the camera whilst yawning to show that she has
given up and her love within the relationship has completely been lost and died.
Andrew Goodwin Theory
 Throughout my music video I am aiming to use the theory of Andrew
Goodwin throughout. I believe that he is an important theorists to
look out for when producing an effective and successful music video
as all his observations and statements are all relevant within the
majority of music videos. Therefore I will have to ensure that the I
am frequently relating the visuals to the lyrics, meaning that all
words sung must be related some what.
 Similarly another aspect that I will follow when following the theory of
Andrew Goodwin is the development of the band/artists
iconography. I will ensure that the appearance of the artist is
frequently used allowing a lot of close ups being portrayed to
emphasise the appearance and identity of the individual. Many
music video’s contain this within their videos as it allows the
audience to be able to recognise the artist quickly and easily
whenever and wherever seen.
 However one of Andrew Goodwin’s statements I will not be following
is the sexualisation of women. I will be ensuring that voyeurism is
not displayed and the women used within my music video are not
displayed as sex objects. To make sure this image isn’t viewed by
the audience I will ensure that all my female individuals used are
covered up and wearing pretty looking dresses instead of the sexual
representations.
