The document describes a graduate student named Samuel who is under stress due to demanding academic and relationship responsibilities. Samuel wants to be fully present when spending time with his fiancée and doing work, but finds it difficult due to multiple stressors and limited time and attention. The document proposes that focusing on being present through meditation for 10 minutes each day could help Samuel develop better presence in his activities and reduce stress.

Stressor: 50% of time we’re awake we are not
present. We’re worrying! [US News] "How often
peoples' minds wander is definitely a big
predictor of who's happy and who's not happy"
[Science]
Context: Overworked grad student about to start
day of shopping with significant other who is
consistently on travel
Calmer: Focused meditation on an intention and
awareness for 10 minutes at beginning of day

2. “Samuel”
When she’s away I miss her [doing work]. When she’s here I worry [about
work]”
Goals: Be present when I am with my fiancé. Be present when I am
doing my work. Less interaction & cross over between the two.
Background: Graduate student in CME with demanding advisor, quals
at the end of the quarter, decreased activity in sports, fiancé is on
travel frequently due to new job.
Needs: More time in communication due to constraint.
More time to do work.
Problems: Difficult to be present due to multiple stressors. Time is a
limited resource. Attention is a limited resource. How might we design
a solution to help him develop better presence in each activity?
