The term “thyroid disease” describes a wide range of conditions involving underproduction or overproduction of hormones necessary to normal biologic functions. The thyroid uses iodine to produce hormones that regulate growth and other metabolic functions. A high level of thyroid hormones causes hyperthyroidism while low levels signal hypothyroidism.
