This document outlines the development of a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery. A working group was formed with consultants from multiple hospitals to identify safety domains and processes to include. They reached consensus on categories like thromboembolism prophylaxis and surgical techniques with strong evidence. An assessment found 10-90% variability between centers and 5-10% variability among surgeons within a center. The collaborative process effectively generated a prototype SOP, and further review and customization is still needed.
