Life is a journey that we need to embrace with tenacity, fervor and with passion and in dedication to our Lord in order that we may make a positive impact in someone’s life each day with those within the scope of our influence so that our lives will bring honor and glory to our Lord God!
My father was not the spiritual leader of our home. Searching for truth; however, never finding it! Lutheran background. Father supplied and made the wine for the local Lutheran church. We were sporadic in our attendance at best.
Thoughts of suicide led to heavy drinking. The only good thing that truly happened in high school was meeting Jill.
After graduation, drinking and drugs became the norm. What took most people 4 years took me 10 years (i.e. completing school). I caused Jill and I to be debt in the amount of hundreds of thousands of dollars due to bad job choices and bad spending habits.
At age 30 our 3 year old daughter asked me a daunting question. She asked me if she died what would happen to her. I had no clue; however, I new Jill had the answer. God began hammering away at my heart!
Weeks after Elizabeth asked me about life and death we were attending a small church in the area. One Sunday afternoon I remember Woody Stone praying for me and with me and pleading to God to intervene in my life. As I left Jill and the girls on the side step, tears flowing down Jill’s face I faced turmoil like I had never done before. It was as if my soul was being battled for.
I had been praying that God would give me boldness like I saw in Paul in his letters. I won’t be praying for that again. On September 14, 1999, Elizabeth fell sick contracting viral manengial encephalitis (sp). She died on our kitchen floor. That was the most horrific episode I had ever experienced. Jill and I gave her over to God. 2008 I walked her down the isle.
In 2005 I allowed pride, arrogance, and strife to enter my life. I turned my back on God, Jill, and the girls. January of 2006 I lost my job because of my disobedience and my journey of humility began.
For 3 years I worked as an Ombudsman investigator advocating for vulnerable adults in nursing homes and assisted living facilities in Anderson, Oconee, and Pickens counties. God used this job as a tool to humble me. On March 27, 2010 I weighed 335 pounds, my blood sugar was 460 and my triglycerides were 1425. I was a heart attack waiting to happen. Having diabetes I have found is a curse and a blessing. A curse because once you have it, you have it for life. 9 out of 10 diabetic patients in nursing homes are missing toes, feet, and legs. Diabetes is a blessing in my life because it has led me to seek God’s direction for my life. God has given me the desire and has driven me into His Word daily. The day after Memorial Day 2009 God restored me to my former employer and position as Executive Director of Heritage Hills Retirement Community in Hendersonville, NC.
