Overview
Every parent wants to protect their children from
harm and to keep them safe. We don't want
children to suffer any pain, whether it's from a
common cold or broken bone.
2
Overview
In an effort to raise parents' awareness about the
leading causes of child injury in the United States
and how they can be prevented, the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has
launched the Protect the Ones You Love initiative.
3
Overview
Parents can play a life-saving role in protecting
children from injuries. Protect the Ones You Love is
dedicated to sharing information on the important
steps parents can take to make a positive
difference.
It’s important to take action, because most child
injuries can be prevented.
Many people don’t realize it, but the numbers
show that:
4
Overview
-- Injuries are the leading cause of death in
children ages 19 and younger.
-- Each year, nearly 9 million children aged 0 to 19
years are seen in emergency departments for
injuries, and more than 9,000 children die as a
result of being injured.
5
Overview
-- Injury treatment is the leading cause of medical
spending for children. The estimated annual cost
of unintentional child injuries in the United States
is nearly $11.5 billion.
6
Injury and Violence
Violence and Injuries Affect Everyone
7
Injury and Violence
**In the United States..**
Nearly 180,000 people die from violence and
injuries each year–nearly 1 person every 3
minutes.
More than 2.8 million people are hospitalized and
29 million people treated in emergency rooms as a
result of violence and injuries each year.
8
Injury and Violence
**In the United States..**
Violence and injuries cost more than $406 billion
in medical care and lost productivity each year.
It is likely that you or someone you know has been
touched by violence or injury: A neighborhood
child killed in a car crash. A friend who committed
suicide. An older relative who fell and suffered a
brain injury.
9
Injury and Violence
**In the United States..**
Violence and injuries affect everyone, regardless of
age, race, or economic status. In the first half of
life, more Americans die from violence and
injuries—such as motor vehicle crashes, falls, or
homicides—than from any other cause, including
cancer, HIV, or the flu.
10
Injury and Violence
**In the United States..**
And, deaths are only part of the problem. Each
year, millions of people are injured and survive.
They are faced with life-long mental, physical, and
financial problems.
**Prevention Saves Lives**
11
Injury and Violence
**In the United States..**
Violence and injuries are so common that we often
accept them as just part of life. But they can be
prevented, and their consequences reduced. We
know prevention works. For example:
Seat belts have saved an estimated 255,000 lives
between 1975 and 2008.
12
Injury and Violence
**In the United States..**
School-based programs to prevent violence have
been shown to cut violent behavior 29% among
high school students and 15% across all grade
levels.
Ignition interlocks, or in-car breathalyzers, can
reduce the rate of re-arrest among drivers
convicted of driving while intoxicated by a median
of 67%.
13
Injury and Violence
**In the United States..**
Tai chi and other exercise programs for older adults
have been shown to reduce falls by as much as half
among participants.
**Injury: A Leading Cause of Death**
More people ages 1–44 die from injuries than from
any other cause, including cancer, HIV, or the flu.
