2. What have we learned?
The 3 R’s don’t work in isolation:
•Successful recruitment involves finding out what motivates
people and giving them good information about the
organisation / role
•Successful retention involves recognising and valuing the
contribution that people make & supporting them to grow in
the role
•Successful organisations recognise this and go the extra mile
to ensure that they match the volunteer to the role - and
remember to thank them for making a difference
3. Recognition
• Recognition starts at the recruitment phase – skills, motivation –
and helps improve retention
• It doesn’t have to be formal – people want their contribution to be
valued, saying thank you, giving a party or awards for volunteers
(eg ‘volunteer of the year’) may be enough
• It does have to be tailored to the needs of the individual volunteer
and the organisation – volunteering is about reciprocity
• Some volunteers may want to volunteer to gain experience or skills
to help them find paid work, but that should be specific to their
needs, not a general qualification for volunteering.
4. Say thank you to volunteers is the theme
of this year’s volunteers’ week
5. Next steps for ppre
• Add case studies from all partners to the framework, so people can see
examples from different countries
• Test out the framework with volunteering organisations
• Link into volunteers week
• Disseminate, disseminate, disseminate - make sure there is a link to
the IVISOC website on all key websites for volunteering in England eg:
• Volunteer Centre Network
• Third Sector European Network
• Third Sector Skills
• Department of Health
• Office for Civil Society
